It seems that in this case the police response should be applauded....

I haven't posted about this on the forum, as I saw no cause, but two acquaintances, (friends of a close friend) were kidnapped a little over a week ago from the lobby of a hotel in downtown Cancun. Last I heard they were demanding 2 million pesos for their release... I haven't heard anything new since then, so I don't know if they are still captive or released... or worse..

If there was ever an argument for more guns in the hands of the people, this is it... as it stands most people have no way at all to protect themselves from being a victim to these despicable monsters.

IMO kidnapping is one of the worst possible crimes, as it not only traumatizes the victim, but the family and friends of the victim as well in the most stressful and upsetting ways imaginable.

EDIT: I should point out that the acquaintances I mentioned were known gold traders who bought and sold gold. It's likely that this is how they attracted the attention of the kidnappers, who assumed that they were independently wealthy.. which is not the case, as they work on behalf of others. This is one reason I didn't post anything about this before, was that I did not want to cause panic unnecessarily. If you are not actively moving money/gold on a regular basis or being excessively "flashy" I don't think you need worry about being a target of these lowlifes.

EDIT 2: Just found out that the acquaintances were released the other day after the kidnappers received about $50,000 dollars.. makes me sick to know that these bottom feeders earned a profit for their deeds, and part of me thinks that they will probably try to kidnap them again in a few month and do it all over again... but at least they are safe for the moment.... this is a serous problem in Mexico that terrorizes people far too often.
