Oh my... Was about to send the stuff we sold with Estafeta, but it seems they have some VERY interesting rules. They refuse to send ANYTHING without the original receipt of purchase... Well, considering I do NOT have these(bought the stuff second hand..) it seems impossible. The solution? They told me to go to the airport and speak to customs to "try to convince them to give authorization" to send the stuff without the original receipts... Im confused: I thought Customs is for stuff that you send/receive outside the country... The stuff is going to DF and Cuernavaca, just to clarify. Has anyone sent stuff with other companies(trying to keep it fairly within budget, and Estafeta charges 160 and 124 MXP..) within Mexico?? EDIT: Correo will send it, but they only accept a maximum weight of 25kgs per box... Im 2 kgs over the limit... DHL charges 16165 pesos(!!!) - at least they made me laugh today
My BF tried sending his sister in DH a cell phone and they told him the same thing. It makes zero sense, so he sent her $$ instead. I am looking forward to what others may have to say.
Tori: Got some clarification from the Aduana(customs): If I do NOT have the original invoice, the Customs agent will "determine the value" of whatever I'm sending. Considering how honest and "pure" most agencies here are, I'm guess I'm in for a BIG punch in the face They also said I will have to pay a tax of 5% since tax here is less than in Cuernavaca... So the more value he/she determines, the more money the government gets - brilliant...
WOW!!!! Not really the answer I wanted, or you wanted either. Let us know how it goes if you make the trek to the airport
Yes, this has to do with the differing tax rates between here and other areas of the country. If your item was bought here for 10% (now 11%) IVA and you sell it or send it to someone in another part of Mexico then the tax rate where the recipient lives gets enforced by Aduana. It may seem stupid, but Mexico is pretty bad, overall, about collecting taxes, so this is one way they try to compensate.
i have a friend who frequently sends cargo threw commercial airlines (volaris i believe), the reason they do this is to maintain the product as fresh as possible and all they do is drop it off at the airport before the flight & someone picks it up on the other end. This option is faster than any other option Estafeta can give you.
RG: I can see it from their point of view, but then again: Why should "honest" people get punished for the lack of the governments control regarding taxes? To even tax something that is clearly not even close to its original value seems a bit strange Might have found a way in the end though, we shall see ToriB: Will do Epic: Its not so much the speed to get it there, its more the budget. But thanks, will keep that in mind for future use
I'm not going to even try to rationalize this, but some of this has to do with Cancun (maybe even Q. Roo) being designated as a frontier state. I had one blue vein experience shipping a 3 year old laptop to IBM's repair facility in Guadalajara. To save time I went down to the DHL office with the machine all packed in its exchange carton with the IBM prepaid shipping labels and they refused to take it unless I could provide the original receipt. Needless to say that was a no. I went home, called DHL for a pickup. Later in the day the driver picked up the carton with no questions. Also, ordering anything, in this case computer parts, and if you have it mailed to you there is no collection of duties even though the value is declared on the shipping label. Have the same exact item sent via FedEx, UPS or DHL and the driver will collect a customs duty before he'll hand you the package. As in most things down here, there is little, if any uniformity in the application of "rules"
Rawkus - Someone referred me to a place at the airport, Aero ??????? something or other. It is sort of across the street from Aduana at the airport. Park at Terminal 2 and walk to the left, like toward Terminal 3. Aduana is down there on the right. Aerowhatever is a little before and on the left. I used them and it went without a hitch. Sorry I am drawing a blank on the rest of the name.
