"Invictus", the movie A dramatization of certain aspects of Nelson Mandela's one term as South Africa's President, "Invictus" gives you a glimpse into the traits that made him the great person he was, and is, as he attempted to lead his country out of apartheid- and to teach forgiveness to his people. Directed by Clint Eastwood, it is both inspiring and entertaining. I recommend it. INVICTUS
Invictus Anybody but us seen this one, yet? It's amazing that I was oblivious to the event, the focus of the movie- which turns out to be the pivot around which the story is told- the 1995 World Cup of Rugby, which was won by the ultra long-shot team, the Springboks of South Africa. Part of what made the movie appealing to us, besides getting a glimpse of the greatness of Mandela, was that we had visited Cape Town in 2001, so the sights and sounds were familiar, and added to the enjoyment. But, this is a movie that all could enjoy, so timeless is the theme of forgiveness, and reconciliation. South Africa was blessed, at the time of the dissolution of apartheid, with courageous leaders: those coming to mind immediately are DeClerk, Mandela, and Desmond Tutu- all great men, in their own way, who bent history in a positive direction by the power of their character, going against what was the popular will, in many respects.
V we went to see it and loved it! Mandela is fabulous and the rugby content is great. I was raised surrounded by rugby - my father was a Welsh International. My only gripe about the film is that in reality Mandela did not hand the captain "Invictus" but a passage from the speech "The man in the Arena" . Its so much better and I wonder why they messed with the truth when the truth was SO much better. Its a great film Tracey
Mandela Today, Feb 11, 2010, is the twentieth anniversary of Nelson Mandela's release from prison in S. Africa. Here is a look at the event- BBC World Service - Programmes - Walking to Freedom with Nelson Mandela
It is not the type of movie I would normally have seen but I thoroughly enjoyed it. He must have been one of the most forgiving leaders of our time.
