Have reservations for March 5-9. I know things are very dynamic right now. Would appreciate updates over the next week as I need to make decision on cancelation before this Thursday. I hope you are all safe and things calm down quickly.

The problems are 1500 miles / 30 hr drive away from Cancun

It would be like me worrying about a trip to Orlando because of what happened in Minneapolis.

I don't think it's an insane question to ask. The center of activity is on the opposite coast 1500 miles away, but the US Embassy just put out a "shelter in place" for all US citizens in various locations, and they included both Quintana Roo in general and Cancun in particular. This came out late last night:

    Technical Difficulties

Now, granted, the US government tends to be scared of its own shadow when it comes to travel advisories, but it's a data point. Canada has also noted "security incidents" in various places, including Cancun, related to the recent unrest. They left Cancun/QR as "exercise a high degree of caution" rather than some other areas that have the "avoid nonessential travel" tag.

You have to make your own choices. I suspect it will be fine and you will enjoy your trip, but it's worth keeping an eye out for escalations and if you are US based, consider using the STEP program to let the State Dept. know about your trip. That gives them a way to account for you if the SHTF.

All of that said, the current US State Dept warning map puts QR/Cancun at a "Level 2" advisory, which is the same level of warning they have on places like the UK and France and Sweden. If I were in your shoes, I'd be planning to take the trip, but I'd be checking the news each morning. The only news I've seen out of Cancun so far is a burnt car and a car blocking a road. Scary images, but nothing you wouldn't see in a bad neighborhood in any of 100 US cities. I'm sure those on the ground like @Steve can keep us posted.
