Hi guys, I was wondering what the climate was on security in Cancun. I have bought my ticket with 4 other friends and going to be in cancun this march. One of my friends posted she just booked her ticket on facebook and the whole status just got negative comments about how it is unsafe to go to mexico now and she should cancel her flight etc. I have been to mexico 3 times Cancun (2007, 2008) alcapulco (2009) and mexico was supposed to be unsafe in those periods too, is anything different now? I did a few google searches but nothing concrete came up besides that US has a travel alert on mexico (Which it has had for almost a decade now).LOL
Mexico Crime Cancun is far away from all the action on the west coast. I've been getting threats from the gf's dad about "don't lose her" etc etc.
I have been going to Cancun every 6 months for the past few years. I understand the barrage of comments and "warnings" you are getting from family/ friends. But unless someone has been there... They are just commenting on the things they have seen in the media! I love Cancun and have never felt unsafe or threatened on any of my trips! Please assure your family/friends that you will be just fine! I promise!!
Mexico is a big country. The drug wars are mainly on the Mexico/US border cities, thousands of miles away from Cancun. I can bet you none of the people who are telling your friend not to go to Cancun have been to Cancun themselves. People who lack true understand of things generalize. Don't pay too much attention to them. Listen to people who have actually been to Cancun. Cancun is a safe place. There are a lot of people who will try to make a buck of you but it's not that dangerous. As you would when travel to any foreign land, use your common sense, don't get too fucked up and try to watch out for each other and you'll be fine.
