Hey all! This is my first time going to Temptation and Cancun in general. While I think I have everything in stock I need for the party at the resort (and a couple boobs cruises!) I really want to spend at least part of a day doing some diving. I'm wondering if there's any divers on this site that could recommend... 1) A dive shop to book with. Out of the couple I've read about online this one seemed the best but it's not really going off anything besides comparing websites. Scuba Cancun: Home Anyone who might have had a great experience with a shop in Cancun I'd appreciate the tip! 2) Dive sites that were particularly cool/interesting. I'm extremely interested in wreck dives and hear there's a handful of good ones in Cancun. Also I saw the sculpture "museum" site and that looks pretty cool if for nothing more than photo ops. Again anyone with some experience I'd appreciate it! Last but not least... Is anyone going to be there between February 7-14 that would like to go diving? It'd be cool to have someone from the same resort to coordinate with. Thanks in advance! 13 days, 4 hrs, 24 minutes... Can't wait!
Hey G-Rod.....You're going to have so much fun, you may have trouble finding much time for diving.....as I usually do. However, the resort has a dive master by the name of Boris who you will find Monday to Saturday at the activities area (same place towels are handed out). Boris is from Vancouver originally and is a excellent teacher and dive master. He does dives from the dock about 2 min from the resort and his prices are very competitive. I haven't done any wrecks off of Cancun but I do believe there are some. I haven't heard that the museum is all that great but have not dove on it myself. If you want a great day of diving, Boris can recommend someone to do a day trip to Cozumel which is amazing. I did 6 dives there a week ago and it was fantastic. I used Blue Angel diving in Cozumel but was staying in Coz for a couple of days. I'd definately go diving with you if I was there! Damn.....WISH I was there!
I would second taking the trip to Coz, the drift diving there is amazing. My very first dive, certified 2 weeks, was on the wreck. It is an old mine sweeper and had only been there a year or so back then. Went and dug out my old log book, C-55 was the wreck. Also dove Grampin, Punta Negra/Grampin & Las Ginas. The wreck was cool, but it was my first open water dive. None of the others could compare to Paradise, Palancar Gardens, or my personal favorite Daliah. As a second dive I can get an hour there, and the sights are amazing. In the past when we traveled with another couple us guys would get up early and take the bus to Playa Del Carmen and the ferry to Cozumel. You will be gone all day if you do that. There used to be a couple shops that booked the trip over and that may take less time. You can check out Scubaboard.com and they have a mexico forum. Jeff ( Daphnes' other half)
I belive Boris recommended Scuba Cancun for a day trip when I went from TTR a couple years back. They run smaller groups than AquaWorld which tends to have too many on the boat in my humble opinion.
We decided against diving this year, its easier to get certified in Canada then go down and dive. I also like to bring a lot of my own gear. Most of the stuff in Mexico is substandard in my opinion. We are there Feb 18-25, just snorkeling this year for us.
Thanks a lot for the info everyone! Scuba Cancun has day trips to Coz that pick you up at the hotel so it's likely that I'll explore that option. I'm not overly concerned with paying an extra bit of cash to have it be no (or less) hassles. I'll definitely have a chat with Boris once I get there. A dive off the dock might be a good way to spend a morning. I'll be sure to stay on these boards for my next trip down. Maybe we'll get lucky and can coordinate something. Thanks again for the info!
Talk to Boris he is excellent. I have done 10 dives with him. Last year he set me up with Rene' and Mericeo I think that was their names. Rene's nickname was frog. They dive in the mornings from the pier. Think it was around $65 for 2 single tank dive at 55 feet. Leave around 9:00 in the mornings and back around 12:00. Pam went diving for 3 straight weeks with them everyday except sundays and said they were great and I agree after 3 days of diving with them. Try Boris and you can't go wrong if staying in Cacncun or at Temptations. If you get a chance try a night dive it was amazing to say the least.
Just got back Boris is using a new company as of Jan 20 to send out his divers. Solo Buceo is the outfit. The prices have gone up a little ($5.00) and I think a two tank dive is now $65.00 (still very competitive). This is for certified divers - non certified are more and Boris takes you out himself in the afternoons. Solo Buceo picks you up at the dock on the right (looking at the ocean) and ferries you over to Dreams where Solo Buceo has there main operation - once there you pick up gear and people and head out to whatever dive site they are going to that day. Depending on conditions and the number of people, you can request certain sites. We did the C55 wreck and it was awesome - no current, which is very rare for that site, and eagle rays! The Horseshoe reef is very nice and "no name" (yep - that's what they called it) had turtles and mantas. Solo Buceo is a great outfit - helpful captains and divemasters. We did have a VERY crowded boat though one day - not ideal, but we made do. Every other day there were 6 - 8 people per boat. The operation that Boris used to use was divemexico.org.mx (room for error here as I'm trying to remember what it said on the side of the boat when walking past it on the dock). But they have a website and you can get in touch with them. Let me know if you want Boris' email address and you can get in touch with him directly. Oh - and the other change now with the new company that is not so good, is that you meet them around 10am, so you don't get back until around 2pm. With the old company, you went out earlier and were back in much better time to enjoy the afternoon festivities at the pool. So that may be a good reason to check out divemexico.org.
I did scuba diving in cancun but it's been several years ago and I can't rem the name of the place we went too. That was my first time diving and it was well worth the money and I highly recommend it to anyone that hasn't done it.
Our first time, never even exposed to scuba, we just did the lessons in the TTR pool and the trip to the diving area about 2 miles out a couple of days ago, did about 45 minutes 25' deep exporing in the ocean, live coral, formations etc, one of the most awesome things we've done on a vacation, we want to dive some more. took a disposable underwater camara and got pics of us next barracuda sea turtle.. and each other. It's a little tough at first but after about 15 minutes you get the hang of it, Boris is good...we recommend it.
