We were interested in visiting Cancun next year. We have not visited Cancun since the hurricane. I have been hearing reports that it is not safe in Cancun anymore. My husband and myself are in our middle 50's and very concerned about the crime in Cancun we are hearing about. Could you please give us some info on this subject? I know you have to be careful not matter where you go these days.

    Thanks for the info Circlemmermaid

May I ask, what kind of "Crime in Cancun" have you heard about and where did you hear it from.

It may seem a flippant question, but it's not. The answer to that will really help us answer you honestly.

I'm not sure where you live or what you heard from where, but right now, Cancun is MUCH safer than my home town of Chicago! Every weekend we have double digit random killings.....

Lately, I have been praying for rain every day to keep the numbers of random killings down in Chicago.

Unless you are involved in the drug trade or plan on looking for drugs while in Cancun, I would say you'll be fine. Cancun is NOWHERE near the border where most of the killings kidnappings you might have heard about are occurring.

Depending on where you live now, Cancun's crime rate could very well be lower than your home town.....GO, HAVE FUN!!!

we were there for almost two weeks in March when the problems on the border were extremely dangerous (as they seem to be right this weekend, too.) Anyway, our relatives in other parts of the country kept telling us we were crazy for going to "Mexico" because of the violence. Not going to Cancun because of the violence is like not going to Nashville because of the violence in Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn--doesn't make sense.

There was one incident last spring but after I got to Cancun I found out the real story. The son-in-law of the retired general was more than likely the target rather than the retired general. He, the son-in-law, was connected to club owners and prostitution in the Zona de Tolerancia (Boy's Town, if you will). While prostitution is legal in Mexico it is restricted to certain areas. There is still the organized crime involvement like you see here in the U.S.

You'll be much safer in Cancun than almost any tourist city here in the U.S.. We actually went to Parque de Las Palapas on Saturday night and stayed there till midnight. It was full of families with their children, clowns, vendors, etc..
