If he can show a bank-statement that has sufficient money to stay for "a while" or to buy a ticket OUT of Mexico, he shouldn't have to provide a ticket.

Whenever I travel and I dont feel like buying a round trip ticket, I simply print my bank statement. So far there has never been any problems.

Ps. Im Swedish, so it should be "the same" for him :) Just make sure he can show for funds that would last him for quite some time, preferably the entire 180 days.

hmm so they do ask for a ticket out of mexico or proof of sufficient funds...he doesnt have a bank account he cancelled them...so do you think it'd be wiser to just get a ticket out of Mexico ? do they always give u 6 months stay ?

If hes lucky, they dont bother asking him for any of the stuff. Guess it depends on who is working and that persons mood that particular day...

IF they ask, and he cant show for anything, he might get deported.

I wouldnt take the chance, even if I have never been asked to show my statements/return tickets.

The 180 days(6 months) is the norm nowadays. Havent heard of anyone getting less than that in 4 years.

Try to get a refundable return ticket? I did that when I flew to USA a few years ago. Just got it refunded the day after I arrived, but obviously missed out on a small sum of cash - $38 at that time(2005).

I think the short answer is that he can buy a one way ticket into Mexico and it is not a problem for Mexico Immigration. I have done it many times, as a US citizen living in Mexico when I use FF miles for one way from Mexico TO the US, and a one way ticket coming back. But I am a US citizen and the airline, Jet Blue anyway, wants me to provide proof of residence in Mexico, which I can do. They told me once that I would need to buy a round trip ticket otherwise.

I don't see this being a problem for a Danish citizen traveling on a Danish passport. He could theoretically be traveling around the world without returning to the US on his journey.

I might suggest comparing prices for a one way trip with the cost of a round trip ticket. It would not surprise me if occasionally you can find a cheaper fare for round trip than one way. There is no penalty if you don't show up for the return trip. You just cannot get a refund. BUT, if you cancel the flight, most airlines will let you reschedule the return portion by paying the change of ticket fee and any difference in the Cancun to Vegas flight. One never knows if they will ever have need for this type of transaction. I believe the flight must be taken within one year of the originally scheduled flight.

Before I got my FM3, and even going forward, I only ever bought one way tickets. I comparison shop for cheap prices, I bought two one way tickets usually on different airlines. And I never had the return ticket to the US on hand as it's all E Tickets now. And even when I moved here, and was still on a Tourist visa, when I went back to the US for a visit, upon my return to Mexico, I have never been asked to show proof of a return trip back to the US. Again, how can they with E tickets.
He should be just fine. I can't see them taking him to a computer to show his itinerary online.

To clarify: It doesnt necessarily have to be a return flight to US, but rather a ticket out of Mexico.

Have never had to show any of mine, but always wanted to be sure.

Not sure what Mexico requires, and I took it for granted that they have the same rules :)

Tori: The requirement for Australia, NZ, Canada and USA(not being a citizen of any of these countries), was to "print both your tickets(emails)".

*EDIT: I remembered that a friend of mine had this issue. Just got off the phone with her. She was denied to board her Jetblue flight in January because she couldn't show a "return or exiting" ticket. Shes an American citizen, since birth.

I assume its up to whomever works that day, and how much they care...

I think the rules are stupid, if enforced; like they were for your friend. You are given 6 months to be somewhere, to require a return trip after affording ppl that much time is crap. And then the airlines turn around and charge you a load to change the flight. I will continue to do it the way I have since I have yet to run into problems. But I have my FM3 now, so I guess it doesn't matter. I love how Airlines are making flying a nightmare and close to putting ppl into debt just to get from here to there.

And yes, I do get great chauffeured service to and fro from a handsome lad..... oh and the pup does one way at a time as well

Tori: To each his own, I guess. I usually just print my bank-statement before any trip where I dont have a return/exit flight, just to be on the safe side.

Many times its the airline that enforces the "law", since they are the ones held responsible IF Mexican Immigration deports a person. Covering their own behinds, I guess?

I know China Airlines are known to be vigorous and when I worked in Brisbane, Australia(at the airport), I saw it a LOT, but only from China Airlines. They left it to the captain to decide if the passenger should be allowed to board or not... A lady had to cough up some $AUD900 to be able to fly from OZ to Canada(through Taipei, China).

I dont agree with the rules, but they are there and if one is unlucky, you can end up in a mess.

So far Ive never been asked to provide for anything, but you never know.
