Im thinking of renting a car and heading back to the usa for a month or two. Im wondering if its possible to rent a car here and drive it across the mexican border inot the usa and then come back with it? If i cant and have to leave the car at the border and walk across into the usa..would i be able to rent a car from there to go see LA and gran canyon etc? and when i come back wooud i be able to rent a car in the usa and take it to mexico ? or can i just rent a car here in cancun and use it for my whole trip and return it in cancun? any suggestions would be aprreciated..Also i cant ly because i have my dog here with me
I am not totally sure since this was a friends story, they went to Miami for a long weekend, shopping & a Police Concert, they rented a car & had to give credit card info as a warranty. That card was like frozen while they had rental. they didn't make a big deal of it since they had other cards with them & didn't want to ruin their trip fighting too long with the bank to unblock it & they could survive without that card anyway. If you are taking a trip this long you might want to find out if you will find yourself in a similar situation since you could be straining your other cards (hotel+food+shopping) to much & find yourself without money on a weekend when banks are closed. Note they were Mexicans renting in the US, this might only apply for foreigners renting in another country.
thanks for the reply just not sure if it has the info im looking for.. is it possigle to rent a car in mexico and take it across the borrder in usa..and then drive it back?
You cannot take a rental car across the border, without the written consent of the car rental company, that they will not give you. You can rent one, turn it in close to the border and worst case, take a cab and walk across. It sort of depends on where you want to cross into California, Texas, Arizona or even New Mexico. My suggestion is to check out potential air routes to LAX from various border towns, on both sides of the border. You may be able to get to LAX or SAN or LAS. If you know where you want to cross, meaning you know your driving adventure route, then just reverse engineer how you can get to LA from both sides of the border, close or not so close. I would not want to be driving in or near any of the border towns myself. Always my advice for car renters is to peel off the rental company decals at the first place you can pull into after getting your car. Good luck. If you want to PM me with specific questions, I may be able to help out.
For that matter.. if you REALLY want to drive.. you might be better off just getting a cheap used car for about the same as it would cost you to rent one.. if you get it legal and it will pass inspection you might even be able to take it into the US, but I'm not sure what the laws are about that. Otherwise you can park it in the border city someplace and walk across. Just be sure to get insurance that has the free roadside assistance.. a good idea no matter what you drive....
