Good friends and participants on this board left a couple of days ago by private vehicle to Texas. They were about midway between Villahermosa and Veracruz, in the town of Acayucan when all major roads heading toward Veracruz remained closed from the storm of a few days ago.

When they contacted me last night, I had suggested two alternate routes that involoved going south, then NW and either approaching Veracruz from the west or bypassing it altogether. They reported that the shorter of these alternatives was reported to take 36 hours for what would normally take less than 3 hours on the regular route, were it open.

I also had suggested calling 078 but it was busy for hours when they tried it.

Does anyone have access to verified roads that are closed or experiencing incredible delays? Or anything else that they might try other than reversing course and waiting God knows how long.

    Thanks

    Flooding

The newspaper had pictures of Veracruz, a few days ago. where something like 1/3 of the city remains underwater. The hurricane which bypassed us, to the south, made a mess of Veracruz.

When we were in Tabasco many roads were closed- our greatest source of information were the gas stations.
    Good luck to them

I think it's just the unfortunate reality that Mexico doesn't have nearly the infrastructure that "1st world" countries have. Where as you might have 10 interstate roads to go any place in the US, in Mexico there are often only 1 or 2 options. (Toll or free road) I think your friends will either have to wait for the road to reopen, return to Cancun, or take the out of the way route to bypass the flooding... They might also consider asking the locals, some of who may know of little back roads that are still open, if they're feeling adventurous or can secure a guide.

Aww! T.J. you are the BEST!! Steven and I really appreciate all of your help.

After 4 days in Villahermosa, the latest news from the Federal Police (the number was busy for the last three days until just a bit ago) is that Libre 180 which hugs the Gulf Coast is now open. Apparently travel is extremely slow going due to it being the only open route at this time.

Wish us luck and we will let you know how it goes in case there is anyone else out there attempting the trek.

P.S. Obviously we miss Cancun already!!!

It took us 18 hours to get from Villahermosa to Veracruz on 180 Libre. That is 300 miles in 18 hours BUT we made it!!

Thanks again for all the well wishes and so our journey continues!
