After all the comments I have read about the tipping the main question still remains... What does "right tipping" actually mean. I understand about the currency exchanges, it's better to bring pesos so that the servants don't have to lost money on exchange. What is the absolute minimum amount in pesos is usually appropriate as a tip so that the server is happy and what was your maximum you have ever tipped when you were perhaps very happy with the service. Some people are saying it's best to tip one person $20US upon your arrival so that you will be very well looked after by that servant and then retip him or her after a few days. Can anyone let me know how to qualify that servant that will be receiving the big tip and how often would you tip them thereafter. Or what would be a generous equivalent tip in Pesos?
you will get 19 different opinions on this , bottom line , tip what you can afford and in the way you think works best,, probably end up being opinion # 14
I tip after I have received service. Last time I was there I spent 7 nights and took $300 for tips. When we got home I had about $30 of that left. The biggest tip I gave at one time was $20 to the house keeper on our next to last night there. I don't know if that's more or less than most folks spend but everyone I tipped said thank you and took it with a smile. The one I think I short changed the most seemed to appreciate the tip the most and that was the house keeper. The smallest tip I ever give is $1 or 20 pesos. That would be for drinks I go to the bar and get myself.
Depends on service....not used to,tipping in the UK so this was kinda new to us ....tip for that tip for this...it's their job and they get paid little I get that so a little tip from everyone helps....
We take a mixture of Pesos and Dollars. A couple of Dollars each time i went to the bar worked for us and we went to the bar a lot!!
Our norm is : $1 per round of drinks, maybe $2 for chair service and the odd $5 top up tip $2-3 at breakfast $5 at lunch $5-15 at dinner depending where we eat; Ala carte restaurants minimum $10 $5 per day for housekeeping I am sure it is a language thing but please the staff at TTR are not servants.
We always leave something everyday for the maid. You never know when it's their day off so a big tip the last day could shortchange them. Also, the tip is to ensure good service. If they enter your room everyday and see their tip, it sure can't hurt your service and maybe ensure your room frig is fully restocked. All that said, we do try to leave a little extra the last day. The maids work really hard and they're always so pleasant when you see them.
This is very close to our norm. Maybe we're a little lighter at lunch. But in general I think your pretty on the money...LOL Jeff
Even not going to refer to them as "employees" that would not make much sence either. Usually we refer to them in person by name.
