Has anyone ever used a rental car instead of hotel transfers and taxi's in Cancun? We were able to get a rental car for just $8 a week with our hotel package so we couldn't resist since it's cheaper than hotel transfers. We're just not sure how much driving we should do while there (like to Chichen Itza or Tulum) or if we should just use it for back and forth to the airport. Is it safe driving much down there?

We never have. Frankly, I'm not sure I want to drive in Mexico. I'm pretty agressive here in Houston, but those folks scare me in Mexico.

Clearly you have never seen the local drivers of Cancun.

Steve once posted some horror stories about rentals in Cancun and how the companies try and rip off tourists I believe, not to mention the Policia pulling people over for phantom infractions so they can make money.

$55 return for peace of mind is worth it IMHO.

    Have an awesome trip regardless!

I have done plenty of driving from Cancun to Merida. Just make sure you take the toll road, which will help you from stopping every three miles at the local villages and towns and stay @ 10% above the speed limit. Just make sure the tires are good on the car. The roads are pretty rough. IMO

...and another thing, do not drink and drive. They do random breath tests. At least in Merida that is. So it could happen anywhere. PM if you need any other info.
