Hi everybody. I have some questions on tipping at the resort. Who should we tip and how much? What currency should we use ? Pesos? American dollars? or should we bring gifts from our country? Thanks

We tend to tip in bulk so to speak rather than for every drink - I just think that the one rule to remember - is to remember to tip lol.... they deserve every thing they can get. We have left gifts / clothes etc in our room at the end of the holiday as well, just remember to leave a note saying that you have left it for the maid to take.

General rule of thumb for us:
    USD
    $5/day for the maid
    $3-5 for breakfast
    $5 for lunch
$10 for dinner at the buffet
$20 for dinner at the specialty restaurants
$1/round of drinks (sometimes bulk tipping $5 for the morning and $10 for the afternoon)
    $5-10 for poolside waitress

It adds up over 10 days but the staff need it and very much appreciate the generousity. They work extremely hard for our pleasure so it is well worth it in our books. AND no, we are not rich by any stretch of the imagination, lol. We factor in tips in our vaca planning /saving.

We are also not rich but we're not poor. You tip considerably more than we did but that's up to you and your choice obviously. Here would be my scale:

    -$1-2/day for the maid
    -$1-2 for breakfast (it's a buffet!)
    -$2-4 for lunch (it's a buffet!)
-$8-12 for dinner at the specialty restaurants
-We never had dinner at the buffet, only specialty restaurants
-round of drinks variable but I generally left something, we don't drink much
-nothing since I only saw her once for poolside waitress

The majority of my tipping was in Pesos :mexicoflag:not US dollars since taking US $ makes no sense for a Canuck :flagcanada:. We spent the equivalent of about $160 CDN for seven days.

Each person will have different feelings towards tipping and there is no right or wrong answer IMHO other than to say "tip something".

In the DR at Blue Bay last year we tipped closer to what you do gutch although the amounts are in US$ As we are Canadians too, we plan to bring pesos to Mexico as Steve suggested in another post on here somewhere. Here's our tipping scale:

-$2-3/day or gifts left on the bed for the maid
    -$1-2 for breakfast (buffet)
    -$2-3 for lunch (buffet)
-$6-10 for dinner at the specialty restaurants
We rarely had dinner at the buffet either; only specialty restaurants
We always tipped every couple rounds of drinks and we had no experience with a poolside waitress

We were always greeted with a smile and know they appreciate it!

We probably tip more than most (and more than what could be considered $ smart) but that is just us Gutch. There is no right or wrong amount to tip...just as you said, tip something.

And it does vary as we are almost always with a group of friends so the tipping alternates and / or gets split (meals). 11 days / 10 nights is usually around $500 including what we tip on the various excursions we take.

@people who leave gifts (I am thinking for the maids)

What do you generally leave may I ask?

    Cheers!

We left a lot of clothes that we took then realised we wouldn't wear again. Les left a few pairs of nearly new shoes and trainers. I also left quite a few toiletries that I over bought and had hardly used.
