What is the cost of an FM2/FM3? I know at some point I will be moving to Mexico. I just don't know when. I have the ability to do it now but I prefer to have my degree finished first(May 2014). It would be myself and my son who will be 2 at the time I will most likely move. I am a spanish major. I am only about 60-70% fluent at the moment but hopefully by the time I graduate I'm like 80-90%, being modest. Are there still jobs teaching english? I will most likely use up my 6 months at first via passport but I want to make sure I have something set up so that there are no issues. I will be renting. I found a place that sounds decent with many units offered and that I can afford. I will be checking it out in March. As long as one of the units are available upon the time I move, that could be an option. Otherwise I know rentals come and go all of the time. I have been asking Norma (Mormis) information about schooling and the cost of it. My son will only be two as I said but it's important to keep in mind. Any recommendations or suggestions for schools? Any information or suggestions at all would certainly help! Thank you!
Hammie, I separated this into it's own thread, it probably wouldn't get noticed much where it was. First, FM2/FM3 doesnt exist any more, it all changed in November. There are quite a few threads about the new system if you scroll down a bit. Teaching English jobs: Several years ago teaching English was a commonly sought job and plenty of people were teachers, nowadays the job doesn't seem to be so commonly talked about. I'm not sure if that means there has been a change in the number of jobs or people are just doing other things. Of those that I knew that taught the pay was not very good at all and of those still here they all moved on to other things. I shouldn't get personal but who will look after your 2 yr old while you are working? English teacher pay isn't likely to be much different than childcare costs. Schools: There are anything from free public schools to expensive private ones and lots in between.
Thanks! No worries at all. I trust your judgment! LOL. I see.... I'm honestly really not sure. I don't even know what age they start school... is it like 4 or 5? I would be able to afford to live there for about 2 years without working.... but i know that would go quickly. I do need to search through the threads and find out what the new information is regarding the old fm2/3 system. I just know that I need to be in Cancun and spending a few weeks here and there isn't cutting it. I also really want to raise my child in Cancun. I've learned so much and learned to appreciate so much.
Re 'Visas', this is a good place to start: http://www.cancuncare.com/forum/liv...a/24948-permanent-residency-requirements.html although it's titled Permanent Residency there are various links that lead to sites that explain temporary status too. I think the compulsory age for kids starting school is 6. Ours started much younger, our little girl started at 3 and our little boy started at 18 months - although for him it's probably not really 'school' but certainly much more structured and educationally focused than day care. Some of the 'day cares' here are horrifying - 20 kids playing on a concrete floor with 10 toys between them and a half asleep carer, be wary when choosing. Having some savings to live on, as you do, without working is always a good idea. It could take some time to find a job and with a little one to look after it might not be smooth sailing.
You hit the nail on the head, Steve. The pay is so low that language schools must advertise continuously for teachers, and turn over is high, with people moving on to other things if they can. The tourism industry may be another matter: with you bilingual, or getting there fast, you may find you can do quite well after you've learned the ropes working for one of the large travel agencies here that field calls from all over the Americas about travel to Cancun and the Riviera Maya.
Personally unless there was a compelling job offer with substantial benefits and salary I would not bring my 2 year old child into Cancun to be raised. Personally I feel that there are so many positives to the u.s that I would just not do it. Both of my children were born in Cancun but, the education and opportunities for children seem to be much more here in the u.s. at least in my world.
Private school options are very decent. My daughter goes to one and we are happy with her progress. We are not in Cancun however, so can't speak of comparables. You'are young ambitious and forward looking. Follow your dream, work hard and don't give up on anything. Mexico is great to raise children...
I noticed that there are many ads in the paper for English teachers and one in particular posted the pay something like 70MXN per hour. I just don't know if that's true. However, for private teachers, I have not seen any in the services section. I think that's what you should look into when you come here in Cancun. There are plenty openings for bilingual reps in the tourism/hotel industry though. Goodluck with whatever your plans are and follow your dreams. Cancun and neighboring areas are beautiful. I love it here.
English teachers Hi Hammie For a fact I can tell you that an english teacher makes somewhere in between 50 pesos to 150 pesos per hour, the lowest paid is the Public Government Schools however they have just started their English Teaching program in "SOME" of the government schools in Cancun and as someone else pointed out, the turn over rate is huge and the main reason is because of the pay. Definetly private schools are better paid, the only time I worked as a teacher was at a Private/Government university (Universidad del Caribe) and the salary was around 130 pesos per hour, I only had 1 group but for a fact i can tell you it would of not paid for my expenses, i loved the job but in order to make a Living and I mean a decent living I would have had to commited to be a full time teacher however the time schedules are all over the place when you have several groups, dont get me wrong once you have your schedule its set, however sometimes you go in at 7 other days at 1 and when you have a child with you it is much more complicated, If i may suggest something is whenever you are ready to make the more if you have any way of leaving your child behind untill you are setlled in, it will save you a lot of stress once you have set up your work, living accomodations and everything else bring him over and you will save a lot, dealing with all this and having a child with you could be frustrating an might bring you down (something like The Pursuit of Happiness) not that you can't Just saying it would be a lot more smooth !!!
