OK, so I am a big rock/metal guy. Grew up listening to rock in the 80's and early 90's. I know what was big here as far as European bands went. so my question.... How big were/are these bands across the pond???? Iron Maiden Judas Priest Black Sabbath w/ Ozzy Ozzy Osbourne Zepplin Pink Floyd Queen Stones even....Oasis (where did they go anyway?) What about the American rock bands, were they big there? Motley Crue Bon Jovi Metallica Guns n' Roses etc..... anyone listening to rock over there these day?
All of the British bands were big in varying degrees: Many were big just amongst the metal heads (Judas Priest, Iron Maiden) but many crossed over to mainstream audiences.Queen were massive (they stole the show at Live Aid in '85) and beacme a national treasure. The Stones were the anti-christ to many Beatles fans by singin about f**kin', getting high and the devil...awesome!!! Black Sabbath were big, but Ozzy by himself not so much.Led Zeppelin and the Floyd again were massive (the Floyd reformed for Live 8 two years ago). Oasis are still alive and well despite not conquering America (they supported U2 and still couldn't do it over there). If you bought "What's the Story..." (the 2nd and best known album) and think you've heard their best, get "Definitely Maybe";that is their 1st and best album.Outings since have been patchy at best, though they won a lifetime achievement award at "The Brits" recently (the UK "Emmys") and played a fab set. They even blew the Chillis off the stage that nite!!! Here's the evidence... Jovi and GnR were massive over here (Axl toured last year);Metallica pretty big with metalheads but not mainstream and the same for Motley Crue, Kiss, WASP etc. Still think your finest exports are the Chillis and recent Green Day stuff;Hope that has vaguely answered your question (though some may disagree dude;music is like politics to some people!!! The Killers are also massive over here right now...If you like the Indie rock thing; check out Razorlite, Snow Patrol and The Kaiser Chiefs;the best of the brits at the minute... Apart from that it's all a bit dull ...bloody James Morrison, f**kin Coldplay (AAAAAAGH!!!!)and don't even get me started on Damian Rice!!! ZZZZZZ:there used to be a saying that went "If it's too loud:you're to old"..Now it should be "If it's too bland and angst ridden:you're too old!!!" I like all sorts of music (C&W apart), as long as it moves me;and in spite of the short hair I love rock too, especially AC/DC!!!
Must say that's pretty much how I see it Mr Bigglesworth, getting tickets to see The Killers is as rare as rocking horse s**t they really are massive here at the moment
thats cool, that pretty much answered my questions. seems like its close to how things are here with rock music. not much of it going around anymore. all seem to hear on the radio is hip/hop and pop these days and very little rock. But its funny cause Ive been to quite a few rock concerts these last 2 years and they are always sold out. Just saw Maiden a few months back, Motley/Aerosmith and Bon Jovi last year, Slayer a few weeks back. All were sold out.
Dude - Bon Jovi? Rock? Tsk, tsk .... Just kidding  So what is your opinion on Canadian rock then? Current acts such as Billy Talent? Three Days Grace? Nickelback? Danko Jones? Treble Charger? Widemouth Mason? Or classic Canuck rock - April Wine, Triumph, Chiliwack, BTO?
Okay so we know Jovi were of the "poodle perm" rock genre:used to laugh my nuts off:these big hard rockers spending more time under the dryer than my Mom!!! But Jovi were great:You couldn't listen to them without your foot tappin': I mean True Faith was as good as they got:What a song!!! Favorite all-time rock song is "You Shook Me All Nite Long" by DC...Can't say more than that. Haven't heard of any of those Candian bands dude apart from Nickelback:you must be keepin' them to yourself over there!!! Any of you folks like Indie (well Venom likes Oasis):ever listened to the originals i.e. The Stone Roses:that is religious...trust me.The first album was called "The Stone Roses" (how inventive) but is just a work of art...Always in Q magazines all-time top 5 (along with Nevermind by Nirvana:amazing album):but this was long before Oasis ever came along. Any of you US folks ever heard of the Fun Lovin' Criminals? From New York but only broke the UK;smooth light rock, almost lounge...awesome a few years back, but became a one-trick pony and flogged it to death after 4 or 5 albums of similar stuff...
Triumph and Rush are by far the best rock bands to ever come out of Canada, bar none- Allied Forces is one of my all-time favorite albums, and I would run out of room if I started talking about Geddy and Co. Denise, nice photo by the way
