So ages ago on our honeymoon to Punta Cana, we had someone suggest we get and take Dollar Coins for tips. They stood out as something unique, and had the extra benefit of not getting wet around the pool. So we got a ton and had been using them for tips. Unfortunately, I now feel like a jerk as I eas told that US coins can’t be used or exchanged for anything in Mexico so basically I’ve been giving people (practically) worthless tips :/ I could do dollars, I’d paper pesos, but I run back into the wet issue that I’d love to be able to avoid (as I like having tip money in my pocket and giving some throughout the day as I get refills). I know 2 of the 10 pesos coins is basically a dollar, but I was reading that there is apparently an actual 20 pesos coin. Does anyone know if such coins are actually able to be gotten at the airport money exchanges? And if not, is it difficult going to a bank and doing an exchange from paper pesos into something like that if you’re not a member of the bank? Is there even a bank relatively near Temptations? Anyone have any experience with this or am I just an incredibly strange person for asking?
Why not just take Mexican money. The 20 and 50 peso notes are polymer and 100 percent waterproof, Perfect for tipping at the pool all day. The larger notes are still made of paper but we had no problem getting reception to break them down into the smaller waterproof notes.
We tip in American bills and they seem to like it. Usually at the beginning of the day at once at Premier bar at beach and if we feel we blow through it we give more. But we drink from Bubbas and dont go back and forth much except for shots. Typically have a pool bag and a pouch too so if use pool bar we tip by drink. At night we tip per drink at various bars. I believe they hold non pesos as necessary to optimize the exchange rate.
