On Oct 6th the governmental delegation from Cancun held a large open-air meeting here in Puerto Morleos to respond to a petetion to allow Puerto Morelos to become a seperate entity from Cancun. The plan was approved and our town is now in the process of moving towards independance. The process will take awhile as certain infrastructures have to be established. ( Police, Bomberos, Hacienda, etc) Having to rely on Cancun for all these servicess has been a hassel fro years, as has having to ask for a share of the revenues to fix our roads, schools, etc. With the change we will now keep the revenues generated here and when you consider that Puerto Morelos encompasses the area from Bahia Petempich to the north down to Playa Maroma at the southern end, that's a lot of hotel/resort income. Of course now there will also be accountability. no more saying "Well, we would fix the roads (insert choice of service), if only Cancun would send us the money, equipmemnt, etc."
Cool that mean the pie is split into less pieces, I doubt anyone will notice a difference in Cancun except for maybe the Gobierno Municipal.
(Update 10/19/07) I received this update from Kathy Loretta regarding the above announcement. "Puerto Morelos will become an Alcaldia, not a Municipio, which does not separate it totally from Cancun. PM does not have the required amount of residents to become a Municipio. The new elected head of an alcaldia will be an "Alcalde" or Mayor. When it is a Municipio, he/she becomes Presidente Municipal."
