I noticed recently that a couple of people have asked whether it was ok to post links to certain things or mention items for sale and I also had a similar query via PM, so thought it apt to post a quick reminder on this. I regard this section of the forum as non commercial and I expect others to respect that too. I'm the one that pays the bills, so if you're looking to make a quick buck out of this site you're looking to make a quick buck out of me which I dont appreciate.

For sale / For rent etc.
It is fine to advertise personal things for sale such as second hand goods, your car or your home. But if you make a living by renting condos or selling second hand cars for example that's not cool.

    Jobs Available
It is acceptable to advertise any legal job. Please include full details and salary, and check back to answer any questions.

    Service / Establishment Recommendations
Recommendations for services and establishments such as plumbers, gardeners, lawyers, bars or restaurants etc are ok, but should be based on personal experience rather than a Desire to promote for financial gain, either yours or the owners (favour for a friend scenario). If you recommend a service you have an interest in, please declare that interest.

Please dont start new threads to recommend a service or establishment you have an interest in. You may, however, recommend something you have an interest in if other people are asking for that service. For example, if someone posts looking for driving lessons and your brother in law happens to be a driving instructor then it's fine to answer that post and declare your interest. But it wouldn't be fine to start a new thread "Great new driving instructor in town" about your brother in law's business.

    Links to websites / blogs:
You may link to your personal website in your signature. If you choose to do this it is customary and respectful to provide a link back to my site in return from somewhere on your site. If linking back I'd prefer you to link back to my homepage Cancun Vacation Guide | Cancun Tours and Hotels rather than the forum directly. Please dont start threads "Hey check out my new site/blog" with little or no further detail - dont use cancuncare to 'leech traffic'.

Please dont link to services which compete directly with something that I already sell on the site such as tours / airport transfers etc unless it is something I dont offer then that is fine. And definitely no affiliate links of any type.

    ---------------------------

Apologies for the wordy nature of the post, it's a question that often gets asked so was partly written so I can refer people here in future. It's not always black and white, so please PM me if you have any queries.

I fully agree with you Steve, your the one who has to pay for admin sever costs ect.
I hope it wasn't directed towards the discount for Residents thread as that was great in my opinion, I have sent at least 4 people who I live with to this site to search for it. (instead of giving them the direct link). But I do understand it could maybe take people away from your banner ads ect....

One thing I have a little issue with (rightly or wrongly) is you can not post in the Tours forum. I for one wanted to back up how good the pirate tour is, I also would have liked to ask for other peoples experiences on the Whale shark tour as I quite fancy it.
But we can't post there, theres many tours I'm sure I would back up having done most of them with my hotel. Just thought it would be a cool idea for other people to be able to post how they found the tour. I'm fully aware this is your business but just thought I would say my bit. :) .

You supply a great service and I mean that, I've lived here 5 months and only found this place about a month ago. I have learned more in the last month with this website then the 4 other months put together.

Keep it up. Ohh have you thought a donate button?. Some of the forums I belong to like VZi have a donate button via Pay Pal where if the forum is important to you then you can donate a small amount and get some sort of special feature like a better sig, avatar or something under your name....

Keep up the great work mate.

Great thread Steve. Much needed and answered a lot of unasked questions.

I might mention what you and I have talked about and you might want to edit it into your post. You touched on it in your Links paragraph without really saying it but we should not provide the link in our posts to sites that one can reach already on your site, at the bottom of the pages we are posting on. I know you asked me not to post the link to Entertainment Plus, which I had repeatedly done. Now, when applicable, I tell them to click on the link to E+ on this site. Maybe that is what you meant by the last sentence in this section but I am not crystal clear about that sentence. Maybe that is web guru lingo saying the same thing I am suggesting.

You might also correct the spelling of financial in the Service paragraph. Thanks to Mrs. Murphy, I always try to keep my words spelled right. Don't always succeed though. Ja ja.

    Cheers,

Nope not at all, just that CancunCanuck seemed unsure as to whether she should post the link, and also Rawkus shortly after seemed unclear about offering a learn Spanish CD set he had. Both of those posts are fine, as they are intended to be helpful and not self serving. But they served as a reminder to me that people were unsure, hence the clarification.

There are a few forums that are read only, that is not to subdue discussion rather to create a place where people can find info instantly without wading through hundreds of posts. There is a lot of traffic flow from the main website pages to the forum, but not so much from the forum back to the main website. Lots of people dont even know there is far more to cancuncare than just a forum so the read only forums attempt to redress that and connect people with services they want to buy that are detailed on the main website.

If you wish to comment or review any tour then please feel free to start a topic in the general Cancun forum.

Yeah I thought about it, but it's not something I'm very comfortable with - kind of like begging. I'd rather people just support the forum by booking their tours, hotels and transfers etc via the site if they feel the offers have value to them. I was surprised to see (in the TTR forum) people recommending other sites who offer the exact same tours, through the exact same providers, at the exact same prices as I do. Just a case of letting people know that "Hey, cancuncare can provide these same services too".

Thing is with the E+ links - if you post a link direct to the E+ site then it does not carry my id, so if anyone books a tour etc then E+ still gets the sale. But it doesn't get tracked as coming from this site, so I miss out on the commission it would otherwise have generated had it been a link from say one of my individual tour pages or links at the bottom of the forum via the E+banner. That's why I'd prefer if people who learn about E+ from here do so via a link that credits me. I think that's only fair, and I know Brant agrees too.

Ahh but there's a difference between a spelling mistake and a typo. Missing the 'n' out of financial is just a case of fat fingers and poor typing, rather than a poor education :)

I agree with the idea of a button for donating. That said, I am glad to read Steve's feelings on it, especially because I've never connected the dots mentally, between all the free goodies of info I was benefiting from, and "paying" for them by using Steve's tour-related things when I'm in the Riviera every winter - which now I will start to do. I knew he had the tours, I just thought that it was a sideline, and that Steve's an internet geek (affectionately) whose forum is the be-all and end-all. God, I feel like such a moron. Maybe that's one reason why the button should be there - cuz I'm sure there are other "morons" like me. Keep up the good work, Steve; I love your forum more than Youtube. I nominate you for Best Forum, if there is such a thing. And sign me up for both your best family-tour this March, as well as your best not-really-for-kids tour.

Hmmm. Here we go again. Steve, I know you are a bright guy with fat fingers but I did not mean to imply (if I did) that you were not educated, although we have never discussed your education or lack thereof.

Just in looking at your post, which may some day turn into a Sticky an become perpetually something we have to scroll past to get to the posts, it seemed to me that financial was spelled differently than what I was reading. That is why I used the word correct the spelling. I guess I could have taken it to be typed incorrectly but suggesting that you correct the "typing" of the word.

You are far more computer savvy than I but now I am wondering if you could develop some software called Type Check to rival that of Spell Check. It could perhaps make you fabulously wealthy, but then I might be accused of assuming that you are not.

We sure are having fun with this.
