Hi everyone, Me and a friend recently got back from an amazing holiday in cancun. We absoultely love the place and would like to go there for a period of time to work. Where would we find jobs? Are there jobs for english people? And how would you go about finding accomodation etc, can it be done? Your help would be really appreciated!! Thanks Stacey xxx
Start by doing searches of the archive of this message board. Search for INM, for Mexican Immigration, and for FM-3. You will get lots of info. As with moving to any country your first task is to understand the legal situation you will be in with Immigration authorities, after you understand that then you can start planning.
Yes it can be done, all us here are testament to that. But it's not easy. Jobs are there but hard to come by. You're basically limited to timeshare sales, hotel entertainment staff, working for a tour company or maybe a rare, much sought after English teaching job. Hours are long and pay is generally poor, except for timeshare which can pay well - if you are good at, and dont mind, lying to people. Accommodation can be found very cheaply, but cheap places will probably be pretty nasty and you might not like living there. Read the stickies (threads at the top of the board), especially as Rivergirl pointed out the one about Visa's. Overall, dont come thinking you can party every night. People who do that dont last more than a couple of months. I would normally say bring at least enough money to live on for 3, preferably 6 months without working. But since you say it's for a temporary period only, just make sure you have enough to live on while here without relying on a job and a plane ticket back home.
The safest way to do follow your dream is to get a job as a rep with one of the tour operators that come here from the UK. Thats how my husband moved here 15 years ago. Try thomsons, first choice and thomas cook. Good Luck Tracey
Thanks guys, I know it wouldnt be a holiday and it wouldnt be a party every night. Thats why i posted my thread, we want to plan and make it a reality. We just didnt know where to start!! xx
It seems that i read somewhere on here awhile back that, someone said that if you were planning on moving to Cancun, and did not already have a job lined out that you had to have proof that you could support yourself for 6 months to a year. This could be proven with bank statements or some other form, but i do not recall the amout that was needed to verify this. Does this ring a bell with any one, or does anyone know the amount thats needed?
Having an FM3 with Rentista status means you cannot work and that you have income from your home country. I'm not sure the exact amount you need to show, but I think it's around $1000 USD per month, for a year, so around $12k US in the bank might be enough?! Or you can show proof of income, so monthly statements showing money flowing to you. I think that's how it works anyway. Maybe one of our Rentista-folks here knows better.
You can "move" here without a job lined up, and stay for the time given on the FMT while you look for a job, then apply for the FM3 once a job is secured. As is the case with me..right now, I have until July to find a job, or leave Mexico and come back for a new FMT. Luckily for me, my bf is supporting me while I am here, so the very small amount in my bank account plays no part.
The FMT is your Tourist Card, or visa, you fill out on the plane and get part of it stamped and returned to you when you clear Immigration. It can be valid for up to 180 days but is only valid for the time entered by the INM agent who checks you in. You can ask for 180 days and if the guy wants to be a jerk and not grant it, you can go to the INM office downtown and they extend it without a problem. Just a pain. Don't try filling in that blank on your own. Years ago I did it, got chastised for filling out an area that was for Official Use Only and he mad me get out of line and fill out a whole new form. He promptly entered 180 days and sent me on my way. Jerk. I thought the amount needed for the Rentista was more like $20,000 US, or $5,000 for the total deposits shown on your most current 3 months of bank statements. If it is a temporary kind of move, Tori's suggestion is best. If you get a time share job, your employer will normally help you get the working version of the FM3.
If you are from Canada or the US then INM is under mandate to give you 180 days on your FMT. Lots of other nationalities get 180 days automatically too (1st world countries mainly).
