Just a heads up IF anyone lives around the parks around Bonampak(the stretch from Coba to Plaza de Tortura..) - keep a close eye on your pet/s. Since yesterday, we have found 2 cats with their heads smashed in by rocks and pieces of concrete. 1 dog was beaten to near death 2 days ago after a off-leash late at night. Sick people doing sick, f*cking things to innocent animals...again/still. The neighborhood called the cops but all you get in return is laughter. Both cats had a collar on them as well...
I'm sorry to hear that, Rawkus. Perhaps someone will see them, and care enough to report it. _______________ However, it is possible that this is an effort by the city to reduce the number of animals running at large. I noticed a dramatic fall off in the number of feral cats in my neighborhood (from eleven, to one), but haven't seen any dead cats around, suggesting they were being removed- dead or alive I don't know, as I haven't seen any activities relating to the cats, here, at all. Come to think of it, I haven't noticed the pack of wild dogs run through, either, in the past few days. Have you seen them, recently? V.
V: Im sure the municipal has other means to taking care of strays than torturing pets(all with collars and id tags..) by crushing their heads..? The dog was kicked and hit with "a hard object" as well... Most notable: They were NOT strays. Animal cruelty doesnt really have any serious laws against it in this region, which is completely ****** up. Even evidence such as video tapes of "dudes" killing and torturing dogs, cats, coatis and possums doesnt even give ANY repercussions. Animals that are mistreated can be taken in "custody" by cops and the perrera, but no charges will ever be pushed on the these degenerates. @Dog pack: I see them daily at the Pemex next to the HZ entrance.
V: Even IF this was the work of the municipal, then they should be in jail for it. Disgusting is the softest word I can think of.
I'm sure seeing dead animals in the condition you found them, would be upsetting to anyone. As I said, although cats seem to be disappearing from my neighborhood, I've seen no bodies of cats, anywhere, suggesting their being removed, either dead or alive, by someone. But, I have no information on whether the city is doing anything more than usual about animals running at large. Properly understood, my remarks amount to having no information at all, just a suggestion about what might be going on. Sorry if that just made the whole thing more distressing to you: that wasn't my intention in telling you what I'd noticed/not noticed, in my neighborhood, which is nearby.
I feel nauseous just reading this, I am so sad that you had to see it. I wish there was something that could be done, it's absolutely vile. I know a few organizations are trying to educate and deal with overpopulation, but until the laws change unfortunately we'll continue to see animals suffering. How horrible.
@V: Its not the sight of them, but the knowledge how they must have felt when it happened that hurts me, and the lack of action against this sick behavior. The link between animal cruelty and for example domestic violence is very well proven, and considering domestic violence in Mexico is kind of a big problem, you think the authorities would want to deal with all this BEFORE it gets out of hand even more... Unfortunately Im quite used to dead animals as such, having worked with wildlife/environment for quite a few years now. I think I misunderstood your first post(I hope at least), as I interpreted it that you might have thought this sanctioned by the municipal itself, and that you thought of it as a "good thing". I do believe Im wrong @CancunCanuck: Its disturbing and it makes so incredibly, ******* upset. There just doesnt seem to be ANY interest in even making an effort against this problem in Cancun. Then again: Cock fighting and bullfighting are considered to be "national sports" - this shows what a steep hill people who dislike this behavior have to climb. I have no understanding why there are no preventive actions taken when it comes to stray animals. Its fairly easy and there is no better time to start than now. The longer they wait, the worse it will get. And not to mention more expensive(this should attract their interest considering how its all about the $$$ here...).
Yeah, you're right, I don't like cruelty to animals, or people: bullfighting, cockfighting, and unlimited fighting are unacceptable to me. Professional kickboxing and boxing are right at the edge. Animals running at large diminish the quality of life in a variety of ways, and have to be dealt with: how that's done is the issue for me. I don't know if it is a popular view that they should be left to run at large, but if that's what's advocated by some, I'd say, do it and animal abuse, such as what Rawkus observed, becomes that much more likely.
As I understand it the laws here make animals the property of their owners, the same as objects. So if someone else kills your pet then they can be found guilty of destroying your property. But if you kill your own pet no one can do anything to you. As I understand it there are not laws that prevent cruelty to animals here. I understand the Perrera is currently working with some animal rescue groups here to find more humane methods for euthanasia (or rather to find funding to use those methods) and also to run some free sterilization clinics. I don't see any chance that the city is some how involved in killing people's pets with rocks, that makes no sense. @Rawkus - I agree with everything you say. And your anger is refreshing. Things won't change here until more people get mad and make it change.
