I thought it would still be taking forever, but if you check out some responses from my 'get your passport thread' in the breakers forum you'll see that is not the case. But I'd pay the $60 and get it expedited anyway.

    thread:

this is from a place in Oregon updated 12/17/07:Currently routine passports are taking 4-6 weeks to process, however passport processing times are constantly changing. For the most updated information follow this link to the US State Department http://www.travel.state.gov/passport/get/processing/processing_1740.html

IMPORTANT NOTE: Expedited passports can be received 3 weeks. You can get a passport in just 14 days if you have a copy of your itinerary and pay the $60.00 expedite fee.

    from that US Government site:
How Long Will it Take to Process a Passport Application?

At this time, we are processing routine applications within four to six weeks of receipt. We are processing requests for expedited service within three weeks.

I just sent ours in, I didn't pay extra to expedite it ...

I'll let you know as soon as I get them back,
but the website is saying 2 to 6 weeks.

I just got my first-ever passport. I applied on December 13. The lady said to expect it in maybe six weeks, though she had heard of it taking like three. I received it in the mail the Thursday between Christmas and New Years. Two weeks exactly. No expedition and no bull. Maybe a fluke, however... I consider myself very lucky to have gotten it so fast without expediting it.

I would pay the extra money just to make sure it's back in time....

We sent our renewal in on Dec 30th and got our new passports in the mail on Jan 9th. I would not count on it coming back that soon and was suprised to get it so soon. We applied 10 weeks prior to our trip cuz we like to add some stress to our lives and were thrilled to get them so quickly.
