Just wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem. We got married last year. Our passports were bought years ago and it still has my wife's maiden name. Spirit says it shouldnt be a big issue as long as we bring our marriage license. Even if we get thru to board the plane, will we have more problems in Mexico when we come home? Help??
You would probably be fine. But if you have the time, just get a new passport. You don't want to be in a position to screw your trip to save $110 bucks. That's just my opinion. Things can be so touchy at the airport depending on the mood of the agent.
Bring more forms of ID including health insurance card and even a bill. I had a friend who needed 5 different things with her name to get through customs coming back to the US.
Ok, thanks for the suggestions. After my FOURTH call to Spirit they finally let me change the boarding pass to her maiden name. Which still seems wrong. Lol We may need punished for this
You should be ok with marriage certificate in hand however, an international ticket should always be written in the name of the Passport to be used in travel. Anzhela has a Ukrainian Passport with her maiden name and when she/we travel abroad we need to make the ticket in this name. This is probably more important since she does not have a US Passport, only a Permanent Resident card (which is what allows her back in the US not the Ukrainian Passport). She always carries our marriage certificate when she travels alone because her Permanent Resident card has her married name on it to tie directly to the marriage certificate if she was questioned. Agree with Steve, depends on the agent, Anzhela's college age kids got shaken down in western Europe last year transferring planes (from eastern Europe) to come home to US. Also agree to bring several forms of ID just in case. It will be fine, don't stress out, relax and enjoy.
I like to Google shit and it looks like you will be ok. Travel with my passport in my maiden name and my marriage certificate
For what it’s worth....a US citizen cannot be denied entry into the United States, even if they cannot produce a passport upon returning. Border patrol can make your life miserable for a hour or so proving who you are...but they cannot keep you out. Passports are necessary to enter the foreign countries for sure .... but not to come home.
The rules can be a bit strange. My wife had serious issues because the names didn't match on her passport and reservation. If they were able to change your boarding pass/reservation - you should have zero issues. If not, the answer is as mentioned above - take as many other forms of id that match either/both names, but most important, have a copy of the marriage license. Of much lessor import, but possibly just as high annoyance, if you plan to use a credit card abroad, they usually ask for passport as ID as well, and they may not accept if it doesn't match. Good Luck, and Enjoy!
