An artist friend of mine, a Mexican, asked if a permit or fee was needed to sell art at Palacio Municipal, Parque las Palapas, that "hippy park" etc. I don't know but figured someone here might have the easy answer. And how about those guys who show up on different street corners, selling pictures. My friend has been working on a 200 Year Anniversary piece, that will be awesome when completed and was thinking of showing up for the upcoming festivities, with a few original pieces and some limited edition signed and numbered prints. Any marketing ideas would be appreciated as well as any answers that can be provided to these basic questions. Apparently this family showed up at the Tiangues a few months ago, to sell some stuff, was approached by some unknown person and was told to the effect of , "Hey, you are new. You need to pay me $____ to sell your stuff. The Tiangues sure looks like public property to me, althought there do seem to be the same people in the same places up close to L.P. What's up with that? Thanks to all.
I believe that yes, you need a permit, at least you do for Parque las Palapas. I had a friend selling things and she did have to pay to be there. Not sure what she needed to do, I think the best thing would be to ask one of the vendors already there what they went through to get the spot. The tianguis, I have no idea, but I suspect there is an "underground" system of permits, ahem.
