Anybody had any really good, recent experience getting new glasses here, in Cancun?

    Is COSTCO any good?

    Hi V,

I found Costco to be the best place. They have a good selection to choose from and the prices are much lower then most of their competition. I needed new lenses. Sams Club wanted to charge $1,800 and Costco was $900.

I prefer going to a real eye doctor, i.e. Opthalmologist, and am very happy with Dra. Marcella Nobmann, whose office is at Galenia.

When my prescription changes, I have found the service and price at Costco to be excellent. One exception was that there was a bit of a delay once and they gave me two extra pairs of lenses without cost.

Dra. Nobmann gives a thorough exam and has two excellent ladies who assist her. It can never hurt to have the old eyes getting tested for glaucoma and other not so good things.

With at least two votes for Costco, I decided to try it. I couldn't have been more pleased. The optician, Andres, gave me the most accurate prescription I've had in years, and the quality of the lab work in making the lenses was top notch.

As an added bonus, the total cost was the least I've paid in years....

I sure hope you don't have glaucoma, or some other dreadful problem that a thorough eye exam would detect. Presumably, opticians are only qualified to measure your vision, while opthalmologists are MDs. I am told that measuring astigmatism can be a bit tricky, especally if getting fitted for contacts.

    So do I, T.J.

Opticians, including the ones at COSTCO, routinely exam the interior of the eye, using high magnification and intensely bright light for signs of disease; and, test for glaucoma, using instruments designed for that purpose.

Ophthalmologists are more highly trained, and better qualified to treat serious diseases of the eye; but, in this case, it was new glasses that I wanted, the rest was just a bonus.
