My honey and I would like to do some snorkeling while we are down that way in a couple of weeks. I am told that the southern side is some of the best around the Cancun area.

Do you guys have any suggestions about what tour (Ocean Runners, etc) to use or experiences you might want to share?

    Thanks,

    Tom and Linda

We have always had the best snorkeling experience doing the Jungle Tour. Here is a picture of us from back in the day (you can also drive your own speed boat).

Thanks much. That does look like fun.

We just signed up for the Boobs Cruise and see that there is snorkeling there as well (not that it would be the only reason we are going) :p.

How does this snorkeling area that Steve takes us to match up to the other places? This might be a one stop shop....heheh.

The snorkeling on the Boobs Cruise is not the best snorkeling location (no offense Steve). The water is very choppy, and fish only show up when they are fed. The Jungle Tour actually snorkels down south by Club Med where there is nice calm blue water and plentiful fish. You don't go on the Boobs Cruise because of the great snorkeling though. Here are a couple more pictures from the Jungle Tour:

The best snorkelling is at akumal bay , that's where all the tours will take you if you go to the Mayan. It's the fourth largest coral reef in the world which no one seems to know about. Lots of fish , turtles , barracuda etc. highly recommended

A lot of the tours you can book stop off at places like Xcaret and Xel Ha. Both places have AMAZING snorkeling from what I hear.
Personally I am thinking about booking a tour to Talum and XelHa on the return. :)

Here is a great sounding snorkel tour Steve has posted right her eon his site.

This is the one (Puerto Morelos) I would recommend. I've done it several times. Very few people snorkel here, the reef is huge and boats just 6 people or so a couple of times a day.

As for snorkeling on the Boobs Cruise, no it's not the best place but the cruise is not about snorkeling - just an optional extra. If the best part of the Boobs Cruise was the snorkeling I'd probably give up :) We have often seen turtles though and the water is not always choppy, just depends on the day (no offence taken btw)

Jungle Tour: yeah it's probably a better place but considering there are hundreds of people daily it's still not the greatest.

Akumal: I've heard it is excellent (not been yet ourselves) but it is 50 miles south of Cancun.

It's not really possible to get a 'one stop shop', each tour specialises in one thing and adds on extras. The extras are never going to be as good as the the primary purpose of the tour.

I agree! In MHO.....once you've scuba'd, snorkling doesn't quite cut it anymore. I'm always encouraging people to try diving.
