Just got done watching the opening ceremonies from Sochi. Tape delayed of course. I was very impressed. Thought the Russians put on quite a show. They had one of the coolest Olympic Flame lightings yet. The announcers even stopped crying about not having everything perfect for themselves for at least two seconds. Which was a first.
Amazing production...far exceeded my expectations! I'm definitely an Olympics geek...pretty cool...except for the ridiculous, gaudy, obnoxious USA - Ralph Lauren designer gear they were wearing. How about some Seattle made Nike solid color jackets with a flag and a swoosh?? Nothing like looking like a Las Vegas all-night buffet billboard. Other than that...I was impressed. :flagusa:
Being from and living in Russia, I probably view everything happening a little differently. My husband keeps showing me the American press reports of problems the poor reporters are experiencing. At first it was a little funny "Welcome to Russia." But it seems as though the American press just wants to complain. They (think they)are like the cool kids in school who all make fun of the geeky kid. I actually feel a little sorry for them. To be able to travel to the Olympics for their jobs is such a wonderful amazing benefit, but to seemingly only find negativity - it's rather pathetic. Oh well, the rest of the world can enjoy. I never felt anti-American until the last few days. Can't wait until we kick your asses in hockey!
As a Russian born, i totally agree with you. What is even sad is some of my Russian friends post stupid negative comments on the net portraying the Russian Olympics in a bad way. They all seem to forget whats it was like living in a place where you had to work hard for what you got and luxuries were not given you just anyone with a credit card. I thought the Opening ceremony was beautiful, describing over 1000 years of history involving a rise and fall of a very resilient nation. I can not help but root for team USA, but I am very looking forward to all athletes performing at their best and may the best bring home the Gold.
