Now extended through December 31st! One learning child. One connected child. One laptop at a time. The mission of One Laptop per Child (OLPC) is to empower the children of developing countries to learn by providing one connected laptop to every school-age child. In order to accomplish our goal, we need people who believe in what we’re doing and want to help make education for the world’s children a priority, not a privilege. Since November 12th, OLPC has been offering a limited-time Give One Get One program in the United States and Canada. During Give One Get One, you can donate the revolutionary XO laptop to a child in a developing nation, and also receive one for the child in your life in recognition of your contribution. Thanks to a growing interest in the program, we are extending Give One Get One until the end of the year. You also may donate laptops via our Simply Give and Give Many options. Though the increasing public interest in OLPC, we hope to give many more children the opportunity to grow, explore, learn and express themselves. http://laptopgiving.org/en/index.php Here's a New York Times article about the laptop and the program: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/04/t...1191677876-fOSMs3sQvlI/nggC bTIHA&oref=slogin
Simply give. Bring the light of learning to a child who would otherwise be left without adequate access to information and education with a donation of one or more XO laptops. A donation of $200 will pay for and deliver one XO laptop to a child in a developing nation, $400 will pay for and deliver two XO laptops, and so on. Your entire contribution will be tax-deductible. Social and sharing The XO laptop was designed to provide the most engaging wireless network possible. The children can connect, chat, share information on the Web, gather by videoconference, make music together, edit texts, read e-books, and enjoy the use of collaborative games online. Mesh network Right out of the box, the XO laptop’s antennae ears can sense other neighboring XO laptops and connect to them, creating an instantaneous “mesh” network for communal sharing and collaborating. This is important because many XO laptops will be deployed in places where there is little or no external telecommunication infrastructure. Wi-Fi The XO laptop features built-in wireless capability, so children can easily access the Internet when there is an available wireless connection. [/b]
I ordered from the Give One Get One plan. Note that the units they ship to NA do not include the pull charger, but you can go to your local hardware store and pick up a $15 solar panel that will fully charge the unit.
