    Re: SWINE FLU????????????

There are no cases of swine flu reported from Cancun (yet). The cases reported can be seen on this swine flu map.

My reading of translated spanish media from the area shows that they probably are not well-stocked with medication. So if you go, it would be advisable to carry some medication. Here are the swine flu medication that are effective. Note that they should be taken in the first two days of flu-like symptoms.

I would also be worried about quarantins at the airport (going in or out). It is already in effect, and if you exhibit symptoms, you may become an unwelcome guest.

I would recommend reading about the general subject before going. Check on CDC site.

At this point you have to feel the dangers are everywhere, there are confirmed cases in California, Kansas and Texas and highly suspected in NYC as well. The next 3-7 days we will all know a lot more. I think everyone needs to step back and let this play out and see. If you have not booked a trip I would suggest not to, whether it is Cancun or Kansas or anywhere in North America.

If you did book then wait wand watch up until the day you depart, but again next 3-7 days will be critical

I agree. I would wait and see. Remember, a lot of passengers to Cancun go thru Mexico City, the hub of virus infection.

Ddarkladydi, We are in the same boat as you. We are booked to leave May 8th. Right now I have just been monitoring the News and Message Boards. I haven't seen any reports of any confirmed cases in Cancun. Hopefully the situation will be sorted out within the next week and everyone will have a better handle on what is going on.

BVG Steve: Does your suggestion also mean that I should not travel home from where I am right now? I think we are becoming too nervous over a matter that is still not fully known as a true pandemic. So I will make sure not to sneeze between now and the end of the year in the fear that the entire planet may get sick from my sneezing.

I'm beginning to get emails and blog comments from people asking if they should cancel upcoming trips to Cancun due to the flu. I've told people that if they have time to wait to make a decision that they should. There will only be more information later.

If you use Twitter the latest info can be found by following @CDCemergency which is the Centers for Disease Control's Twitter feed. Their Swine Flu updates page is here: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/

take it as you want, and if you are asking my opinion I would have to know where you are now. If you are in Cancun and it were me I would definitely come back to my USA home as fast as possible. Once in my USA home I would avoid USA malls, churches, restaurants etc until another 3-7 days when we have more info. Taking precautions for 3-7 days is not the end of the world or all that much of an inconvenience. I have been through hurricanes where I had no power etc for 7 days and while it was inconvenient it was not all that painful

This is very serious and I for one do not think it is worth the gamble to see if it becomes a full pandemic before taking common sense precautions

Steve: I am in the US, have been to malls, churches, restaurants etc for the past week and intend to travel home tomorrow. Nothing wrong with me or any of our family so far. I think this is totally absurd, and other then wanting to lose business from rentals in Cancun for those who own property there, there is notthing substantiated in Cancun to not travel to there. The Dept of Health of Quintana Roo has announced today that there is no sign of this problem whatsoever in the entire State. So please let people travel there including yourself, and you will find that all is ok. Wash your hands as often as possible and you will be ok.

As the longest thread of 5 on the same issue I'm going to keep this thread live as the official thread on swine flu and lock all others, past and future.

By all means continue discussions but confine them to this single thread please, it's a lot more helpful to people that way.
