Rather belatedly we have been thinking about changing schools for Dani now that she is moving up to Primary and will need to move to a different location anyway. In the process of research Jannet managed to dig out the following links which show Cancun's schools league table for 2007/8: Cancun Primary School Rankings Cancun Secondary School Rankings Britanico where she is now seems to be right up there, but I still feel the facilities are not as good as other schools have to offer. We are due to have a tour of the school in the next few days.
I asked Jannet the same thing. It's on the site somewhere: http://www.ifie.edu.mx/ENLACE 2008/PRIMARIAS 08/Escuelas_primaria_08.htm My translation of her translation: For primary, Jannet said that it was based on 3rd graders who had been at that school for all 3 years and covered their results in Spanish, Maths and Science. The no of evaluados in the table is the number of actual kids the scores are based on. So, the larger the number of evaluados the more representative the average score would be since schools with low numbers of students could easily be skewed either way by a very few exceptionally bright or exceptionally thick (for want of a better word) students.
Unfortunately, given the levels of corruption here, and the fact that these "private" schools draw high tuition, I think I would have to be very skeptical of any such list as these.....
Life, what you say is true, but it's nice to have some sort of starting point (and comprehensive list of what's available), trying to pick a school based on word of mouth just doesn't work for me. As a parent, I can use this list to narrow down the search and put in my own investigations and visits to make the decision. Sam, honestly, I have not heard good things about the public schools (there I go with word of mouth). I will say that when I teach kids (at a school that is just for learning English), the children in private schools are far more advanced in their ability to learn and have better discipline in classroom behaviour and homework than those in public. If you want your child to get a bilingual education, private is really the only way to go. Just my humble opinion of course.
I heard the same that the public schools here were crappy - you still have to pay something as well don't you? It's not completely free - or is it?
