For those who like the idea of meeting other expats, and perhaps expanding their social circle, there's a regular gathering of expats, all stripes, at La Taberna, on Yaxchilan, on Friday evenings. Owing to popular demand/protest, this gathering has been relocated to the NON-SMOKING SECTION! You will no longer need to throw away your clothes, afterwards!
WELCOME! Last evening, Friday, from about 7:30 to 10:30, was the second Friday in a row in which people gathered at La Taberna to get to know a few more expats in Cancun; and, to learn more about life in Cancun, for those who are visiting, here. Generally speaking, just looking around, or asking around, will lead you to the table(s) where you can find others to talk with, in English! Most are from Canada, the U.S., Australia and the U.K. You're welcome, if this sounds interesting to you, for any reason. At present, most drinks there are two for one; and, as an example, two local beers will cost you 44 pesos. For those who like to have an occasional smoke, there's a smoking room to which you can retire for a few moments, when you wish.
V et al, The Friday night gatherings at La Taberna have been going on for year actually. Previously people were smoking throughout the bar. A few months ago they changed the smoking laws. Doug closed in what is now known as the smoking room. That is the one you can't see into because of the smoke. Well, it's not quite that bad. I think I am safe in saying that probably in the last 5 years there have been less than 3 times when English speaking regulars have not gotten together on Friday nights. In fact, Doug (owner) sees to it that Scott from this board has at least one table reserved for I think 7pm. Cheers,
I was going to say myself these events have been running since long before I arrived here in 2004. How is the turnout these days TJ? As you know I dont get out much these days.
About ten people, more or less, one or two English speaking Mexican nationals, the rest from UK, US, and Australia, dividing their time between the smoking room and the much bigger non-smoking area. Smoking room is awful for non-smokers: it is also for the smokers, it's just they don't know it!
Steve, I usually go late if I go at all. But there are always both regulars and newbies. Scott and Hop are there early and others just come and go. I have gone at 2 am and found regulars still pounding the Bacardi, Superior, etc.
Things went badly, last evening, for the non-smokers: the group moved into the smoking room, and stayed there, saying Doug had offered them a table, large enough to accommodate everybody, only in the smoking room....
Sorry V, Did you go home and burn your clothes. I usually go home, straight the laundry room, strip down, toss everthing in the washer, usually not the shoes, turn on the washer, take a shower and go to bed. Please note that I said usually. There are exceptions to every rule.
No clothes burned, last Friday, T.J. Five of us got together in the non-smoking section, and had a long talk over a few beers. Girls, you missed meeting a hunky, 25 year old from Edmonton! Jesse is his name. As nice to his parents as he is to total strangers, and a real pleasure to be around, he's built like you can't imagine! He's here till the 6th....
