A few years ago I read that a new international airport was being planned in Tulum. Well, I decided to search to see what progress has been made...and I have no idea. Much of the information available through a quick google search presents conflicting perspectives: yes, it is going to be built; no, it is a real estate hoax; yes it will be built but it's on indefinite hold; blah blah blah. So curiously, do any of the expats living here (which I am one now!) know what's really going on? Is it really happening, has it already started, when will it be done? One of the articles also mentioned that along with the airport, the government is planning to modernize (thank god) the 307 from Cancun to Tulum -- any insider info on this as well? Thanks much!
Hi Coby - How's life in Playa? They've been talking about the Tulum airport for at least 7 years. When we moved here 6 years ago many things were much as they are now...lots of rumors and conflicting info on the web. I think some progress might have been made in that time, in that they seem to have decided what land they will build on. But look at what happened in the Costa Maya, they planned to put an airport there...they even BUILT IT! But it never opened. That airport is sitting there now with jungle vines growing through it... I don't know the details of that but have several friends who were actively involved in opening that airport. I think that the case in Costa Maya was basically that the airlines wouldn't agree to land there because there wasn't enough infrastructure in place to warrant landing big planes. Tulum shouldn't have THAT problem at least, Tulum has infrastructure and tourist demand. But still, I will believe that Tulum's airport will be built, finished and open when it is built, finished and open!
Hey RG! All is well here The first few days were pretty tough and without internet for the first week we felt really isolated; but now all the kinks have been ironed out and we love it. It's been a really good transition for us I was afraid that was the case with the Tulum airport. Gathering from the internet it's been a bit of a vapor project off and on and off again. I hope it comes to fruition though -- surely the extra throughput for the area would lower ticket prices (until the tourist numbers triple!) If you ever hear anything more about it, please keep us informed! Thanks
Airport Coby. There is a really lengthy thread on the Playa.info site. You pretty much summed it up in your original question. Yes, No, Maybe or just a scam. Jimmy BTW RG, really strange weather this summer in CO.
The back and forth of this issue has been going on forever and continues to do so. Here's a translation of an article from August 17th on Noticaribe. No substantial news, just evidence that they haven't scrapped the plan entirely. (original Spanish article..... http://www.noticaribe.com.mx/rivier...uspende_el_aeropuerto_de_la_riviera_maya.html) MEXICO CITY .- The Secretary of Communications and Transport (SCT), Juan Molinar Horcasitas, said the federal government budget cuts and the effect on the dependency of more than 12 billion pesos does not contemplate the cancellation of major projects such as Punta Colonet airport and the Riviera Maya. . At a press conference during a tour of the stroke for the 3 suburban train system in the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico, Molina chose not to elaborate on those projects that will be affected by the cuts because, he said, that determination will depend the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, a unit that will send its proposal to the Chamber of Deputies and only after this process will make it possible for the SCT comments. The official announced that 30 days will be announced the relaunch of the project schedule Megaports Punta Colonet, Baja California. "The project is still active, what is being done is to relaunch its redesign harder line with the global financial conditions," said Molinar. Said that despite the cut in 2009 shall be the highest budget in the history of investment in infrastructure, which in 2010 will seek to encourage private resources through projects that reduce the uncertainty attractive. For the airport in the Riviera Maya, a report by the newspaper La Jornada confirmed the official's statements to the effect that the work would not be suspended, but noted that not yet have a date for launching the tender.
