Hi I am new to Cancun and I have a few questions. First of all what is the best way to go about finding a 100% English spoken job here? Do I just need to go to all the hotels in the Hotel Zone and fill out applications? Are there certain jobs that only Gringos can get? Is there something with working in Cancun or just Mexico itself that I need to be aware of being a Gringo? I am in the process of learning Spanish but am a long ways away from being close to fluent. I came out here on a whim and don't quite know what to do with myself anymore. I have noticed there are a lot of people from the US and Canada here as well as the UK. So where do I go to meet people? Is there anyone willing to meet up for a cup of coffee or a beer somewhere nice and busy for safety sake? I am a 24 year old female from the US. I don't really know anyone here so anyone who would be interested in going out would be greatly appreciated. I am definitely missing the easy social networking of living in the US. Anyways send me a personal message or write back on here if you might be interested. If you'd like to send emails back and forth or chat online before going out I am okay with that too, and for anyone who could help me with the job situation I am greatly appreciative. Thank you! Thank you!

Honestly, the only thing to be aware of is that jobs are very very few. I know ALOT of Mexicans out of work and the hotel jobs will for sure go to them first. And even if you were fluent in Spanish, that isn't much a help. In the 7 months I have been here, I have interviewed at 8 places. All but one was with Timeshare/Vacation Club type places. ALL of them are 100% commission. The other job was at a hotel, for a decent salary, BUT I had to have my FM3 already in hand. And to get the FM3 you need to have a job offer. So, that was a catch 22.
I wish you luck, but really the best way to land most jobs is to network. Meet ppl and they will give you references. It's a struggle all of us who don't have an outside income have to deal with.

Tori, you don't need a job or offer of a job, in order to get an FM-3 (or FM-2 for that matter). I had an FM-3 for 4 years and just got my FM-2, and haven't worked a day in my life in Mexico. What you DO need is a residence. So come here on a 6 mo. FMT and find an apartment or something where electric or the telephone is in your name...OR get the landlord to write a letter for you, substantiating the fact you live where you say you do, and an FM-3 is yours for the asking...heh-heh, and a few thousand pesos.

EDIT: I think I just remembered where you're coming from, in this matter, and you also DO need a source of income....so maybe for your purposes, and to avoid lying about it, a job would be a good thing. I forgot....sorry!

    For jobs, try this site:

Empleos en Mexico - Trabajos en Mexico - CompuTrabajo

They have TONS of openings, and when I was job searching, I set up a few interviews with companies on there.

Novedades newspaper also lists lots of good jobs. (You can buy it at the nearest Oxxo store) The newer listings usually come out every Monday.

My advice is to be agressive and send out as many resumes as possible. (even though they may take weeks to get back to you)

If you can call and set something up, it's 10 times better. Or just show up in person with resume in-hand if you know what hotel/company it is!
