Mexico is now (as of March 1, 2010) making it mandatory for all Canadian nationals that wish to enter Mexico to have a Passport or they will be denied entrance.

This means if you show up at your departure airport without a valid passport you will be denied boarding onto your plane

I had heard also that the passport had to be valid for 6 months prior to your visit but I'm not sure how valid that is.... I got mine 5 months ago( before my departure date) so I'm crossing my fingers.

I think you misunderstood. I believe your passport must be good for another six months after your departure date...they just don't want your passport to expire while you on vacation. It doesn't matter if you got it yesterday...you should be good to go.

I am sure that the passport only has to be valid for 6 months AFTER you travel. I can't see why a shiny brand new passport would be any less good than a 6 month old one, unless there is something I don't know?

All it means is that your passport expiration/renewal date must least 6 months away from the date that you leave Canada for any international travel otherwise the country you are visiting "could" reject your entry into that country.

This makes perfect sense. There were way too many canadians there when we went a couple weeks back. Good idea to keep as many out as possible so they don't drink all the beer. :)
