Does Netflix streaming work in Mexico? I want to bring an Apple TV as a Christmas gift and wondered if I can expect access to Netflix to work.

This is the message you get when you go to their site to sign up from Mexico:

    "
We're not sure you will be able to sign up
    for Netflix from your area.

You will need a valid U.S. mailing address to sign up for Netflix. Also, you will only be able to watch instantly if you are in the 50 United States or Washington, D.C. It looks like you are outside the United States. If this is incorrect, please contact your Internet provider for help. We are sorry for any inconvenience."

I've tried it and, no, it doesn't work in Mexico. I wish it did!

Could you use a proxy server in the states and a US mailing address?

Yes, I've read that you can use a proxy server but that the free ones tend to slow the connection down too much and the video pauses frequently. I'd like to know if anyone has found a proxy that works well!

As I've privately told several people before strongVPN works very well for watching netflix, hulu and others, but of' course it's not free... free "open" proxies are rarely fast enough for even basic web surfing nevermind video content... if one really wanted to, I imagine the Apple TV device could be configured to use the VPN proxy like the one I mentioned which would allow it to work as if it were in the US...

In my case I use an old laptop as my netflix (and other online services) box keeping it attached via VGA to the larger TV screen.. add a wireless mouse and you're off... alternatively you could just get a really long cable and run it from your exiting computer to the back of your screen if you don't mind tripping over cables as I did for a while... LCD and Plasma TV's are after all just glorified monitors so its not rocket science to connect them to a computer.
