This storm we've been living with for the last two days, worse last night, has given me a little taste of what it might be like to go through a hurricane here.

We had wind driven rains most of the night, and the wind with its gusts made sleeping difficult, given the way our hurricane shutters rattled through the night. It's still blowing hard this AM, prompting me to look once again at the forecasts.

Seems it's going to get worse, before it gets better, and we may have another noisy night ahead.

V: Ive been up since 3am, drinking tea and looking at the rain. Impressive amounts of water, thats for sure.

All of downtown is flooded. New streets are being built, but once again they "forgot" functioning drains, haha. ;)

This mornings walk led me to realize just how bad the local Government is when it comes to preventive thinking: Literally hundreds of water-pools, filled with dirty street water = a great x-mas gift to all the dengue mosquitoes.

Potholes are well hidden as well.

It reminds me of the right-wing coalition we have back home: Last winter, they tried to act surprised about the train chaos during heavy snowfall. To my knowledge, it has been snowing every winter in Sweden for quite a few years, hehe. ;)

But, other than that, I enjoy the heavy rain, as there is not better setting to enjoy multiple cups of tea...

Good for you, Rawkus! I haven't yet ventured out today.

Here's what our storm looks like from above, mid morning. It's pretty impressive.

(View is anywhere from 30-60 minutes old)

I know I wrote that the rain is great for tea, but now even I get sick of this, haha. :D

There is no end to the water coming from above. Impressive.

This "storm" has killed over 70 people in Central-America, including "a few" in Mexico, according to various news agencies.

At this moment, 7 PM, Sunday, it's mercifully quiet (amazing how annoying wind noise can become). The storm is now centered over Cancun.

I don't know if it makes any sense to speak of us being in the "eye" of the storm: we'll know in a few hours, if the wind picks up again.

From the looks of things, we didn't have winds of over 60 MPH in my area, because no limbs of trees are down, just lots of branches.

The center of the storm is now about 90 miles from Cancun (7 AM, Cancun time), and the winds are light, after a night of relative calm. (This is the slowest moving storm I've ever seen!)

Whether we will again begin to experience the winds and rains, as the storm moves away, that we experienced as the storm approached, remains to be seen.

The percentage chance that this storm will intensify over the next two days has been upped to 60%: watch out, Gulf Coast, and Florida!

The winds in my immediate neighborhood brought down one streetlight, broke off tree branches, snapped dead tree limbs (but not the healthy ones), and brought down the upper portions of a healthy papaya tree that had the temerity of growing above a wall surrounding a house.

There is a street that always floods badly, Calle 11, a block W on Chichen Itza from Tulum. The residents typically remove the manhole and drain covers as the former are pushed out of position buy the rushing water and the latter get plugged with trash. Knowing this neighborhood is a lifesaver, car saver, as when the water is up you could just drive into one of these open drains.

I wonder when anyone will fix the giant missing drain cover hole, at least .5 mt deep, in front of the closed Italian Coffee Co in the Soriana Home Depot area. Going south on Kaban it is in the area where you would start your curving turn onto Andres Quintana Roo. It has been open for weeks. Very dangerous.
