Tres muertos y siete heridos saldo de accidente en zona hotelera - Grupo SIPSE, sipse.com

So, a 22 year old gets blind drunk at Coco Bongo, leaves at 4:20am and jumps into his nice shiny Hummer before heading off the wrong way up Blvd Kukulcan.

A kilometer and a half later he crashes head on into a truck full of workers, killing 3 and injuring seven. After jumping in the passenger seat and claiming an unknown friend was driving didnt seem to wash he then tells the Police he is a relative of the Governor of Durango.... like it matters.

Let's see how long this guy gets in jail. I wouldnt be surprised if he gets off somehow.

What a tragedy. Could have all been avoided with taking a cab.

Very sad. Many youth here in Cancun don't worry about designated drivers. Time to start some campaigning, I think.

Its not just youth who drink and drive - I have seen bus drivers with beers in their hands and many taxi drivers who smell of booze. Introducing a driving test would be a good start !

What a tragedy, I am just crushed for all those young lives lost. There is FAR too much drunk driving in this city, they need to crack down. Enough with the "blow in my hand" breathalyzer test, get cops out there with real equipment, impounding cars and imprisoning offenders. (They cynical part of me adds "taking bribes to let the offenders go").

People need to be educated if we can't find justice. I think my first exposure to "MADD" (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) was in elementary school, with bi-yearly reminders about the dangers. If we can't get the law to crack down, perhaps some good old fashioned knowledge, fear and guilt in people might help. The one or two banners I've seen on the street are not going to impact people, it needs to start in the schools and workplaces. Now, where the funding comes from is anybody's guess, but I'd love to see the alcohol companies involved, I'm guessing Corona isn't exactly struggling and could put a great publicity spin on it. :S

(edited to add) Here's the FB page of the murderer, he seems pretty damned proud of his Hummer. Guessing he could have easily afforded a taxi....

    1. The Tabasco guy seemed to have been flaunting that his Godfather was some politico.

    2. Tracey's story about the beer drinking bus driver reminded me that not long ago I got pulled over at the Bonampak / Coba intersection at night. When the cop announced for me to pull over on his loud speaker, my 3 passengers and I said he sounded drunk. It was obvious when he came to the car that he was in fact under the influence.

He was looking for the "bite" which I had no intention of paying. Usually my US registered car is a cop magnet late at night but I was not doing anything wrong. He said he was going to send someone to drive my car to the impound and take me to the hospital to have my blood checked.

Bottom line is no ticket, no bribe, no driver no nothing and he went on his way. His partner never exited their vehicle. What a joke.

A month ago I got stopped on Lopez Portillo in Pto Juarez on the "no front plate" issue. I carry Article 106 with my car papers. This idiot tried to tell me that I only had 60 days to register my car with Mexican plates. I informed him that was not what the law (Art 106) said and that my car was not old enough to be nationalized. I wrote it down but he kept referring to Clauses 95 and 96 in the Transito book. I never even bothered to see what they said as it was irrelevant.

When I wrote his name down in my note pad and asked him to call his supervisor to the scene, he backed off and took off. Jerk.

    Has anyone seen this story?

PolicĂas someten a una ciudadana en CancĂșn - CNN iReport

It's a "citizen's report" and video of a woman being detained by police for allegedly taking a photo of a taxi driver paying a bribe. According to the report, the woman is now missing and hasn't been seen since this video was shot. (I must use "alleged" as it's not from a main stream source so have no idea if the report is totally true. Watching the video only gives one side of it in my opinion)....

I read about this in Novedades yesterday - it seems that I read that the cops had pulled him over before he went on his rampage and let him go with a warning.
