:aktion069: Hi all! I wanted to introduce myself. My husband and I have visited the area a couple times a year for the past 5 years and have always rolled around the idea of living there. We both work as chat moderators for a company based in the UK so basically we can work from anywhere that has a good internet connection. Our 2 favorite areas are Playa del Carmen and Isla Mujeres. We had thought we would like to stay on Isla but after much discussion we think Playa will better suit us for the long haul as there is so much more to do with the malls, movie theaters, gyms, and such and we fear the beach on Isla Mujeres would get monotonous after a while with not much else to do. We have 2 small dogs and will be bringing them with us. Our plan for now is to come in September for 4-6 months as a trial run to make sure this is for us, as I have read many stories of people moving there with rose colored glasses and it being much harder to live there than they thought it would be. I do believe we will have a leg up on others since we both have secure jobs on the internet. Anyways I just wanted to say hi and I welcome any and all tips for making the transition easier. We are in the process of looking for a place in Playa that allows dogs. Our budget for housing is about 1000.00 usd a month so we hope we can find something that fits our needs.
Welcome to the Boards, I am sure, you will find plenty of information and help from this great community. Greetings Nico
Moving Since you'll be moving to Playa, I'm sure you'll want the phone number of the best vet! I met her a week after I moved here and she's been my vet ever since. She cared for my 3 dogs when we came down and now cares fo our 4 new ones. Her name is Claudia Lewy: Clinica Veterinario de Playa del Carmen, Calle 45 (45th Street) Phone 984-873-1108. Her Clinic is 1 block East of the Highway on the right hand corner, near the junction of Avenida Juarez. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9-6 and Saturday 9-2. Good luck to you!
Oh thanks so much for the tip on the vet. I have put that info in my folder I am making for the move. Any tips on anything whatsoever is appreciated. We are very optimistic that this is the right move for us, are putting our possessions in storage and selling our car, and our son has a spare bedroom that we can stay in when we visit the states, but if it is not what we are envisioning we will come back after a few months and find a place. This is something we have discussed for years since our first visit and I am so excited!
I agree that Playa is a better fit because there's much more to do there than in Isla. I'm also glad that you seem to be aware of what you're getting into. It's hard to adjust at first, but once you just go with the flow it's an amazing lifestyle. $1,000 USD should be able to get you a pretty nice place in Playa. Good luck with everything! Keep us posted on your adventures
Welcome to the boards! I don't have much information as I am moving there myself by the end of the year... but just wanted to spread some positivity and good hopes....... wishing you the best of luck with your move! <3
Thanks! We look forward to meeting some peeps that live there. I think I have found a place in Playa it is called Crocs Condos. The lady offered us a 1 bedroom on the ground floor which will be good for the dogs for 700 including internet and everything. About 50.00 extra if we use ac which I am sure we will use LOL. We are researching a few more places but think this may be perfect.
even though you will be in Playa, you may want to look into joining the International Womens Club here in Cancun, great group and good way to meet people and network...look fot it online and on facebook.
Apologies for the belated welcome, but welcome! One thing I would suggest is dont agree to renting a place before you get here. Book yourself into a hotel for a week or two and find somewhere once you're here when you can do the legwork and view the properties before commiting. View at least 5 or 6 places before deciding. There are tons of places to live and only a tiny proportion of those are advertised on the 'net. Those that are are largely marketed at foreigners and priced up accordingly. I looked up Crocs Condos and to be honest looking at the pics and bearing in mind the location a 1 bedroom for 700 USD seems ultra expensive to me for a long term let. Coming in September you have the bargaining power, it's low season for the next 3 months and many properties would stay empty if not let, use that to your advantage. With up to $1,000 a month to spend on rent there will be a ton of options, so make sure you get the best bang for your buck.
