Hello, my name is Joaquin and I need some help regarding leaving in Cancun. I was born in Mexico but moved to the US when i was 11. I am currently residing in Indiana, but soon i am going back to Mexico. Its been 9 years since I moved here, I have no clue what to do once i get there. I speak and write both languages, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, Joaquin and welcome. If you go to the search and type in "moving to cancun" or similar, you will find lots of information previously posted. Being Mexican and bilingual will certainly help you to find a job quickly. Do not expect to make a whole lot of money or live on the beach in a mansion and you will not be disappointed. Lots of people come here--a few make it for more than a year--fewer still make it long term and many of those who do are not happy and wish they were somewhere else. That being said, I have been here for 24 years (originally from Indiana!) and am happy and I am sure others are happy here as well. Come and give it a try and don't let any expectations you may have determine how you feel. Take it as it comes and don't expect it to be like it is where you are now. Look up at the top at the "stickies"--especially http://www.cancuncare.com/forum/living-cancun-riviera-maya/15769-guides-living-mexico.html and http://www.cancuncare.com/forum/living-cancun-riviera-maya/528-top-ten-tips-happy-life-latam.html "Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not." I think before I would move anywhere I would go for a vacation/recon for at least a couple of weeks to see what life is all about in that place. Real life. Don't stay in a beach hotel. Make some friends who are not tourists. Go places; observe; learn. Mexico is a big country so why Cancun? There are tons of options in terms of places to live in Mexico. Have you ever, as an adult, lived in a tropical climate where you clothes end up wet with sweat if you get outside of an air conditioned car or building for even a few months? Would you mind having to go to service providers to stand in line and pay your bills every time you get one? Or pay extra to pay it at a convenience store that can accept the payment. There are many places where the weather is actually cool or cold much of the year. Do you have enough assets/cash/passive income to sustain what can be a lengthy process to get a job. And as Jim sort of implies, the way of life will not be the same. That is why I suggest not just packing you stuff and coming to Cancun without doing some serious homework. It will be 7 years in July for me.
Thanks Jim and t.j. I know that things are not going to be easy, since i was born in veracruz, in a town close to the coast, the climate doesn't bother me. I also lived in cancun before, but i was 10 and only for six months. I have an uncle that could help me for a little bit there, but i want to know if it's easy to find a job, i know that i am not going to get pay a lot but i just want to live a simple life. thanks for answering my post.
Joaquin, even for a mexican moving in Cancun is not easy, i was born and raised in mexico city, this is my second attempt to live here, must admit I LOVE IT!!! but its not easy, finding job shouldnt be a problem... finding a GOOD job is hard. im lucky that this time i have a job that i love, pays well and im finally settling down where i always wanted to live. my first attempt (back in 2008) was a mess because i didnt have a steady job and as any other 21 year old i partied a bit too much. most of the people in this forum (if not all) really like it here and all the advice you get here will be great. Mucha suerte and welcome back!
Joaquin, Don't misunderstand what Mormis says about "as any other 21 year old i partied a bit too much." She is now a 24 or 25 year old who often parties a bit too much. Jaja Mormita. Gracias por mi regalo ayer. xoxo,
TJcito thank YOU and im really glad you didnt meet me back in 2008 when i really was a party animal... and im only 24 btw lol
Great advice. Does anyone do the 6 months in Cancun and 6 months in the states. I am a 49 year old military retiree working for Tio Sam as a mailman. I am ready to say the heck with this and move down south. But I know change can be tough. So I'm thinking 6 and 6 to see how that works. Comments, questions, ideas ?
@Kolnui: Have quite a few friends from both Canada and US that do the "halftime here, halftime there"-thing. So far I havent heard any complaints regarding the way they live, except when they are to return home to Can/US, hehe A few of them bought timeshares, but most of them bought a flat/small house here in Cancun. Recently helped renovating one flat downtown. They got a really nice and quiet 2 bedroom flat for around 50K US and in 2 weeks, it was "as good as new". They flew in workers from Mexico City(friends of mine), as they dont trust the local workers when it comes to getting the job done right. I think the 6 months-6 months would be a great way for you to get to know Cancun more closely, rather than "two week holidays". Best of luck with whatever decision you make
Thanks for the response Rawkus. I will be traveling to Canun on May 23 for just 1 week as a way to get to know my way around a little. Probably be back in Oct to check out the rainy season, unless I get fired from my job first. I've been thinking about making this move for sometime now. If you know of anyplace I can rent for a week, May 23 to May 27th please let me know. I would rather stay in town than in the hotel district. Thank you
