Tourists to all-inclusive resorts in Mexico suspect they were given tainted alcohol

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4716418/American-tourists-say-given-tainted-alcohol.html

    http://www.breitbart.com/texas/2017...laying-cartel-kidnapping-says-victims-family/

From my experience, we have been at TTR 4 times with zero problems noted in terms of alcohol being "tainted", people being drugged, sexual assaults, etc.

We have stayed on the resort most of the time and took USA Transfers to get to the resort. We have not gone out late at night to downtown Cancun, so I can only speak about daytime excursions.

We have also done the cruise and visited Isla De Mujeres with zero problems in terms of the food or drink.

So this stuff seems to be sensationalist news gossip but it seems to be scaring alot of people away from Mexico. The comments section keeps saying "stay away from Mexico, its too lawless and dangerous".

Has anyone felt unsafe at TTR or in Cancun before on this board? Should we worry about going off the resort late at night?

We plan on visiting TTR again sometime later this year to see the remodel. I suspect many American cities are more dangerous than Cancun (since it is well controlled) but I would like to get other opinions on this subject.

We have been in Mexico 3 times in the last year with our next trip in November. 2 times to TTR and one to Progreso and Cozemel. While at TTR we went to Isla mujeres and Tulum for day trips. In all of those travels We have never felt unsafe from locals, tourist, or resorts. We have rented cars, bikes and golf carts, driven the country side and walked through the local side towns. Found amazing little restaurants, open air fish markets, and cheap messages on the beach. Never once did we feel unsafe.

Are there problems in Mexico yes of course. Is it unsafe I think not as long as you keep your head, don't do 7 shots of cheap tequila in 2 hours, don't take shots from people you don't know and trust. Guess what, those are the same rules I use here in the states so for everyone talking smack about Mexico just don't know and I am glad they are not vacationing there. they would be total downers.

I've lived in Cancun for a month short of 13 years, I certainly wouldn't choose to live there and bring my kids up there if I thought it extremely unsafe.

During that time I've done some silly stuff, particularly in the first few years. Like regularly walking 2 miles home very drunk alone through rough downtown areas, visiting seedy places way beyond the areas a tourist would ever go and nothing to report from those.

Incidents we have encountered during those 13 years are:

    - A previous house we lived in was burgled while we were out. They stole a lot of stuff, including laptops, cameras, Jannet's jewellery (incl engagement and wedding ring) even our little girl's piggy bank.

    - Jannet suffered an attempted mugging while getting into the car in an underground car park, but fought him off and was shaken but unhurt.

    - We both had suspected drugged drinks once each. Mine was at Coco Bongo, I wasn't staying at the hotel but met some friends inside the club that were staying there. I hadn't drank anything before arriving but within 3 or 4 drinks could barely stand, and after being 'poured' into a taxi slept for 24 hours straight. I don't think the dodgy drink was intended for me, but was placed on the group's table and I probably drank the wrong drinks, another person in our group also suffered similar effects but not quite as severe (I was probably playing catch up and drinking faster than others). Jannet's experience was at Paty O's, she had two glasses of wine and half an hour later could barely stand.

    - Had a couple of physical altercations with taxi drivers when challenging them about rip off fares. Got hit over the head with a wooden club in one of them :)

    - A half dozen traffic stops from Police, most were unfounded and we left without incident. Two were probably justified, and we paid a small bribe rather than dealing with the hassle of the ticket. Also got a justified ticket for illegal parking, I partially blocked a cycle path but didn't realise. That was pretty easy to deal with.

That's about it. May sound a lot but it probably isn't very dissimilar to many people's experiences elsewhere if they go back 13 years, tend to go out a lot and live in a city with close to a million people.

I don't consider The Daily Mail or Breitbart to be reputable media outlets.

Everything has to be a sensational over the top story these days "Man puts penis in a blender, you won't believe what happens next!" The more exciting the headline, the less chance I'm going to click it these days.

Going back to the recent circulation of the drugged drinks, the tragedy of the brother and sister with her dying has the brothers own words saying they had 4 or 5 shots of tequila and then another shot and this was all within hours of arrival. Factor in a regular drink or 2 in that time, since nobody just does shots without a beer or mixed drink already in hand, and that has black out written all over it without being drugged.

Was just on a Canadian news site which does daily polls for various things. Today's poll was "Are you afraid to travel to Mexico?" Out of approximately 4500 replies 63% said yes they were afraid to travel to Mexico. Seriously WTF! Amazing what sensationalized media stories lacking facts and completeness can do to influence one's opinion on something. Just proves that 63% of people are mindless sheep incapable of thinking for themselves and subscribe to "if it is on the internet it must be true" WOW!!! The stupidity of the masses never ceases to bewilder me but the "Penis in the blender" thing sounds interesting, lol. Ignorance is bliss I guess...

This is great news, there will be 63% less people who I didn't wan't to be around anyways while on vacation. Side note the rates should drop if supply vs demand holds true.

Well I'm an adult male about 160 lbs and drink regularly...First day curse can sneak up on you pretty quick after an early morning for travel and not much sleep the night before... Not to mention not eating very much during travel plus a few drinks on the plane, a beer or two while waiting for your transfer, a welcome drink or two at the hotel and one hasn't even hit the pool yet. Grab a quick bite to eat with another drink. Then possibly add a few shots plus a couple of margaritas and I have been totally done for by 4 pm after arriving at noon. Sound familiar? We have done about 18 trips to Mexico / Jamaica and this has bitten me on 5 of them and a few almosts. Like I said, sneaks up on you pretty quick if you are not careful.

I'm not trying to downplay a truly tragic event but we are often the authors of our own demise.
