Ok first off let me say this will NOT keep me from going to Cancun but I wanted to share it with others just in case you are super sensitive to the media reports of this subject. Personally speaking, I've never been to Cancun but will be making my first trip in almost a matter of days. I see this issue as nothing more than people being generally unsafe however since they don't know who the victims are, it's not known how they were selected by the killers.

Ultimately for our trip, we are totally happy staying within the confines of the resort for the 5 days we are there. If we do go out, of course we'll go as a group. No different than what I do living here in Salt Lake City...

6 Cancun cave murders, 3 removed hearts: Is it safe for Atlanta vacationers to go to Cancun?

(edit by steve - Possible malware alert in link. Please see warning 3 posts below although personally I found no problem)

(edit 2 by steve. Changed thread title as it is now known that no Americans were killed as the original title mistakingly claimed.)

I have no fear of travelling around Cancun alone with my wife it is as safe as it is walking around even here in Canada. As long as you stay in the right areas and don`t get yourself in trouble you should be fine. Bad things happen all the time even here in Canada or the US there is constantly murders and bad things happening so all you can do is be smart. Sounds like gang on gang violence to me, I`m sure there would have been way more in the media if they were American.

I love the way the question at the end of the article is spun:

What's your opinion? Are Mexican drug cartels to blame for U.S. drug imports or not?

Might be more appropriate to ask:

What's your opinion? Is the insatiable thirst for drugs in the US the reason Mexican drug cartels exist?

I, too, failed to find mention of any Americans in the article, nor in any other news source, at the moment. When I opened this thread, I fully expected it to make reference to the seven Americans who died today in Afghanistan!
    ____________________

The crimes committed were grisly, no doubt. But, Cancun remains safe for tourists, as well as for those who live here, like me, who go about their lives on the streets of Cancun, every day.

I've never been threatened in any way, and I'm all over the city, in good neighborhoods and bad, performing my work and getting to and from appointments, shopping, going out for entertainment, etc. My personal impression is that I'm no more or less safe than I'd be back on the streets of a typical, medium sized city in the U.S.

There is every reason to believe that the crime reported on this thread is exactly like other, more grisly crimes that have occurred here over the last few years, and will prove to involve intergang/drug related warfare, like the others were.

This is not Afghanistan, nor Detroit: relax, and enjoy your vacation! (And, afrazier 5), you've got my permission to leave your resort to see the sights and take in a little of the local culture, if you should decide to do so!

Bad Link in "Americans Killed" thread?

When I clicked on "Fox News" in the thread mentioned above, my internet security warned me of 85 identifiable computer threats contained in the link. (That's got to be a record!)

You may want to exercise caution..., and go directly to Fox News, if you want to see the article, which actually contains no reference to any Americans killed.

It matters a hell of a lot in determining how safe your vacation may be.

If you want to spend your vacation getting involved with drug cartels / money laundering / arms deals / corruption / people smuggling then Cancun is definitely not safe and you shouldnt go. If on the other hand....

Relax people are killed every day in the US and Canada. The cartels don`t want violence in the main toursit areas anyways because that's where alot of their drug money comes from. They are reffering to gang on gang violence not gang on tourist violence. The article is a fear mongering article with very little factual information given. Cancun is safe I went all over the place last time around with my wife. I have also been all over playa del carmen and have always felt safe in Mexico. Walking around downtown here in London Ontario Canada at night is probably more dangerous.

That is true, it's basically a rehash of the linked Fox news story with embellishment to give it local (Atlanta GA) interest, and appeal to those who dont like Mexico and Mexicans in the first place.

Lets remember that Examiner.com is not a reputable news source, staffed by qualified journalists. It's news articles are written by stay at home Moms who earn a dollar each time the story is viewed 100 times. It is in their interest to create a stir to increase their page views and earnings.

While 6 bodies have been found around 30 miles from Cancun's Hotel Zone, the circumstances and identities of the deceased have yet to emerge. There's doubt being cast in the local press in Cancun about the 'hearts being removed' twist which is I am sure what prompted this particular stay at home Mom to write this 'story' - gore is always good for a few extra links, meaning page views, meaning extra cents in her pocket.

    Local news link:
