We have always just taken American dollars. Make sure to take lots of small bills, because at times we have had a hard time getting the correct change back.

I really should just copy and paste this from other threads lol...

If you're coming from the USA then you may as well take dollars, they work just fine in Cancun for most things. If you are coming from another country (ie. England, Canada etc.) I'd suggest getting pesos instead. Every time you change currency you are getting hit with a fee to convert. Why pay it more than once?

Also, shopkeepers are likely not to accept the American dollar at a rate that's close to what the market actually gives. For example if the exchange on the market is 12:1 odds are the shop owner will give you 10:1. This is pretty common even outside Mexico. The shop owner will see this as another opportunity to profit and it also protects them from losing when they get hit at their bank.

A bonus is instead of wet American 1 dollar bills (come on guys go coin like us cool folks in Canada, eh?) you can have a wad of $20 peso bills that are platicised instead so you don't have to worry about them.

Either way have a great trip!

Well that might be true, I would still bring American money. Unless you plan on spending all your pesos while in Mexico or saving them for your next trip down they are useless to you when you get home.

The person asking is from England, so I would highly recommend only getting pesos. If they were American or Canadian I would say either. No reason for a European to exchange into American and then possibly exchange into pesos.

True, but you don't need to exchange it. They love American money.
Not sure what the American dollar exchange is in Europe but in Canada it's par or a little higher right now

Get pesos thou , really makes no difference to me. Lol.

If your coming from the UK I would think it would mainly come down to what the best rate they're offering between pesos and dollars.
