How much money should I exchange and were to exchange it. We are bringing 1000 US dollars for spending money. Whats the best rate. Only 2 more sleeps
I have never exchanged my money. I just take smaller bills for tipping, such as ones and fives and the rest twentys. Hope that helps and have a great time..
Same here. We also just take smaller bills for tipping. We have never exchanged money while in mexico.
Go to your bank here in the states and get a few hundred in $1 and a couple in $5 and a couple in $10 and the rest in $20. Use the $1 - $5 for tips easy to grab a few and have with you. Remember anything you buy at the small lobby shop they do accept USD but give all change in Pesos. Don't pay for something that's $2 with a $20 cause you will get all pesos in change. Even the small drugstore across the street is the same way USD accepted Pesos in change. Use your $20 for bigger purchases. This is the system that we use and it works every year for us.
ok so this may sound stupid.....do you just carry a small bag with all these bills and will customs question me about the money?????????????
On our trip which we just returned from I brought 3 bank envelopes filled with various 1's , 5's, 10's and 20's. I just carried them in my carry on bag and had no problems.
We have never had a issue going thru customs with our cash. I keep it separated in envelopes and have in my carry on. We take a small pool bag for lotion, sunscreen, chapstick, I take some with a money clip and throw in the pool bag for breakfast, lunch, and pool bar tips and the cute little waitress that walks around and takes drink orders all day. The rest I lock up with our passports in the room safe. At night I take some more and put in my pocket for dinner and bar tips at night. We have never had an issue with anything missing from our room. Hell last year I forgot to put the money back in the safe and left it laying out all day. Not a penny was missing.
We usually change out some for peso's ahead of time. Will get more down there if needed but the 20 peso note is like 1.60 and perfect for tipping. Plus the bills are all waterproof plasticy money so you can keep them in your boardshort pockets while in the pool and never have to worry about drying your money back out or peeling off wet dollars. Bartenders and the like also then don't have to bother changing out money later on so it's easier for them too. Also works out nice if you decide to leave the resort ever and in airports when you don't get screwed on the conversion of whatever shop you are at.
Oh, I will add since skibums brought me back here, the exchange rate at the hotel front desk has been consistently better than my bank here, Chase. So I've just been getting it there if i don't plan ahead, or being at the border I can get slightly better directly next to the mexico border crossing. (12$/dollar at Temptation currently, 12.7 at the US/Mex border, like low 11 something at Chase)
We just bring 1,5 and 10 dollar bills came back with 440 pesos anywzy last time. We use that up first then dollars. Do not exchange money you get ripped off. Tip in dollars using 10 to 1 ratio. So tip 1 dollar for ten pesos. I have been doing that since 2004 works great. We take 200 in ones. 200 in fives and 300 in 10s for 11 days. We come back with about 100 plus a was of peso that keep to hand out next time. We also have 100 each in stashed 20 for emergencies. Hope that helps.
