American or Mexican Pesos. Either is fine. I'd suggest doing the exchange before you go and avoid exchanging money at the hotel.
I would get pesos. Our travel agent advised against American dollars (can't remember why, but it was even noted on our itinerary). The hotel exchange rate is not on par, of course. But if you can't exchange before you go (or need to exchange extra), there is an exchange booth just across the street. Enjoy!
bring about $200 in single dollars and you will be fine - they like the tips in US dollars, and ones are easier to deal with.
They do prefer pesos since that way they can spend right away without having to go to the bank to exchande since banks give them the best exchange but either one will do. I like to bring a few 2 dollar bills since they think they are lucky but only give it once to tip then just regular bills after. Also if you want only a certain bartender to get the tip give it to him when he isnt behind the bar since he has to share with everyone at the bar otherwise. At least that is what I have been told in the past. Rob
The bartenders and maids told us otherwise, actually, and we specifically asked them how they liked their tips. They preferred US dollars when we were there in Oct.
Wish I'd known this. I've changed my currency for mostly pesos and a small amount of dollars (to pay for Steve's cruise). We got a fairly good rate on the dollars, but exchange rate on pesos wasn't as good for us. I think shops and stuff quote a better rate in pesos though, such as charging 1 dollar and 10 pesos for the same thing, so I've heard.
Be it Pesos or American dollars they have always been received with a smile  so I wouldn't sweat it.
We went to CIBC yesterday for Mexican Pesos and it is a two week order. Wen to a Currency Exchange in the mall and it is a 48 hour order, with a better rate than the bank. Even the bank admitted that currency exchange outlets have a better rate and get the money faster.
