Nearly everywhere you will go as a tourist will accept USD.

BUT, you will get more bang for your bucks with pesos as the bars, restaurants and stores typically have a less attractive rate than you can get at an exchange booth, called Casa de Cambio.

Those rates are less attractive than bank rates but don't involve lines and waits.

The absolute best rates available, with no fees by the bank on each end of the transaction, would be to use a Bank of America ATM card at ScotiaBank or Santander Serafin. A BOA card gets you a much better rate at these banks, than do their customers obtain. The dollar has tanked the last 3 weeks against the peso. If I was sitting on the $2k and have time, I would open a BOA account for this reason alone. It would save you $80- $100 US over using the Casa de Cambio. You could close the account when you return if you wanted to.

I might even go exchange this morning just to compare.
