Did you see where it goes up .70 today? Now the federal minimum wage is $5.85...with another 70 cent increase next July and another 70 cents the next July. With it ultimately being 7.25 per hour. I'm glad to see this...as I know there are conflicting views on both sides of this issue....what are your thoughts?
I don't really think the federal minimum wage means as much as the state minimum, so I wouldn't get too excited. Here in CT, one of if not the richest states in the US, the minimum wage is $7.65/hour. in Georgia, though... it's $5.15/hour.
also... some industries are exempt from the min. wage laws: Like the Federal wage and hour law, State law often exempts particular occupations or industries from the minimum labor standard generally applied to covered employment. Particular exemptions are not identified in this table. Users are encouraged to consult the laws of particular States in determining whether the State's minimum wage applies to a particular employment. This information often may be found at the websites maintained by State labor departments. Links to these websites are available at www.dol.gov/esa/contacts/state_of.htm.
Most of those exceptions are service related jobs which benefit from tips, like bar maids, waitresses, masseuse at the local rub & tug... on second thought, she might not be getting minimum wage for different reasons... Our minimum wage laws (well, mostly yours, but even ours to some degree) is what makes other countries richer and ours poorer, which then forces them to increase min wage again... ... ... The laws should be abolished.
Three levels over here that are not allowed to differ by, county city ect ect etc... There are three levels of minimum wage, and the rates from 1st October 2006 are: £5.35 per hour for workers aged 22 years and older A development rate of £4.45 per hour for workers aged 18-21 inclusive £3.30 per hour for all workers under the age of 18, who are no longer of compulsory school age. Works out a litte more that yours but I bet your not tied down by red tape from Brussels ( oh what a joy it is to be part of the European Union   ) that regulates you to a maximum 48hr week and a compulsory 2 days off every 14. Ian
It's good that wages are increasing, but on the same note big d@m# deal. Wages are increasing along with everthing else, so really it still does'nt compensate for the rising cost of day to day living. I'd like to see Congress live off 5.85 an hour, pay rent, utilities, daycare and what ever other expenses there may be. Wages should of increased years ago.
Approaching $6.3 ( CDN) for a pint in a pub here and $12.60 (CDN) for a packet of fags. Intrest rates just gone up and forcast to do so again next month, thats nearly a $210 (CDN) rise in the last year for me alone. I'd rather be your side of the pond anyday of the week. Ian
