So we are in Mexico right now and hearing rumours of some sort of exit tourist tax that has to be paid at the airport when you leave . Has anyone that left recently heard about this or is it just another scam at the airport ?
Keep walking, it's a scam. I spoke to a DL agent on our last trip. We walked past the people along with numerous others. We almost got baited too.
I saw this on CANCUN.BZ When you leave Mexico there is a "Departure Tax " of about $18.00 US per person but this tax is usually included in your airline ticket and you don't need to pay it again. If your are not sure please contact your airline before you leave to Cancun and ask them if the Mexican Departure Tax is already included. See the Cancun airport map page for more relevant information about traveling to Cancun. I would think that if someone just approaches you it is a scam and most if not all airlines include it.
I believe that the "departure tax" and the "Visitax" are two separate things. The departure tax is usually a part of your airline ticket. The Visitax is something new last year and may be what they are trying to collect at the airport. This is from one of the resort websites that I googled (not-TTR)... New Tourist Tax in Quintana Roo, Mexico The state of Quintana Roo in southeastern Mexico is made up of several municipalities including Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, and Isla Mujeres.
