    Wats up guys,

Im 22 and I plan to move to Cancun or Merida in 2 month. I actually live in Chihuahua with my mexican girlfriend and we plan to get married soon for me to be completly legal.

We are hesitating about coming to Cancun or Merida. What are the difference bettwen the 2 city? Is Merida more expensive compare to Cancun? How about the activity there? Does Merida have a lot of beach?

    Thx

Merida has no beach....you have to go north to Progreso, for the beach. Olde Merida is a colonial town, making its living from the hemp industry (rope, not pot) in days gone bye. Merida is inland and the Summer heat is unbelievable....but then any place in So. Mexico is the same, if you do not live within about 3 blocks from the water.

My advice is to check them both, before making a decision....It's all a matter of priorities.

We spent eight days in Merida, initially, to see what impression we got of it, having heard and read many positive things. We were there in mid March and, though we knew it would be hot, had no idea how hot it could be. Though it wasn't the hottest time of year by a long shot, we suffered from the heat and, having lodgings in town, had no relief from it in terms of sea breezes, or other.

    Hi Sgt Samy!

They are very, very different cities, despite being only 4 hours apart.

As mentioned above, Merida has no beach. The coast is about 40 minutes north of Merida, and the beaches don't have the clear turquoise water that Cancun has.

Cancun is a very new city (only 40 years old), and it focuses much more on tourism, nightlife and the beach. Many locals complain that it doesn't have much culture, which is largely true.

Merida is centuries old colonial city... tons of history, lots of family-oriented things to do, cultural activities, historic buildings, etc etc. We've visited it there several times and loved it, but it's almost like being in another country from Cancun. Merida is considered to be much cheaper than Cancun, as well as being safer. There's lots of activity there, but most of it ends at around midnight.

Both cities have pretty large and supportive English-speaking communities.

I live in Cancun and it's such a fun city with beautiful beaches and natural surroundings... but Merida definitely has the upper hand in culture and history.

I think my amiga Gringation pretty much said it all!!

I love Merida, and actually would love to live there one day. It is a city full of history and culture, and there is always something to do. May not be a huge "party" city, but it is fantastic on it's own. Merida is MUCH more affordable than Cancun. Or I could say you get a LOT more for your money!!!

I do like Cancun as the weather is near perfect. The water is unbelievable. Hotels are great for weekend getaways. My friends live here. I just don't see myself building a family here.

Either way you go will be a great experience. Good luck :)
