Hi, Anyone know where I can get a Mayan fence from like this one? I want to build one to cover the boiler and gas tanks in my back yard. (it's not bamboo - it's the sticky fences they have here)
Wow, Mat, I see those everywhere. Every small town has people's homes made of these things. Head towards Leona Vicario, should be able to find some pronto, and get them delivered! Those houses, by the way, are charming, but not bug proof by any means; yet, Mayans live in them to this day. By the way, on that subject, do you know there are over one million people for whom the Mayan Language is their first language, even today? That baby's not dead by any means! Here's what it sounds like- [ame=]What Yucatec Maya Really Sounds Like - YouTube
Yeah, I see them absolutely everywhere and whenever I ask where to buy them no one can give me a definitive answer - mysterious Mayan sticks!
I just asked an office full of people here at work, and everyone knows what I want, but no one knows the name of the wood or where to get it. It's fascinating that it is everywhere, yet no one knows exactly where to get it :icon_mrgreen:
There is always that possibility that these basic building blocks of a Mayan home are not produced for sale, but simply cut from the forest and shaped by the family, and friends of the family, when the time comes to build a new dwelling. If that´s the case, you could probably still pay someone to do it for you. Head down the highway till you start seeing people living in these types of dwellings: they should be able to tell you where and how they get them, when the need them. It´s fascinating to me that people live in such dwellings; but, made from readily available materials, they must be almost free apart from the labor involved. And, they are cool, a must in this climate.
That's what I'm thinking as well V, the patch of land they are going to build on, they clear it and then use the materials they cleared to build with.
They are saplings. Maybe the lumber yard on the outskirts of town can get you some. My regular cabbie suggested it when I was thinking of making that kind of pergola. We never followed up.
Mat There's a place near the end of Andreas Quinta Roo and Lopez Portillo that may have them. Also on Rte 307 across the highway from Joben there is a place that may have them. Sorry on the 307 that I can't remember how far away from Joben.
After further investigation....it's just sticks. They use a wood "xit" or something for the load bearing stuff, but the fences are just made of sticks lying around!
Matt, If you drive out Quintana Roo and turn right onto Lopez Portillo. There is a place that builds palapas just a couple hundred meters down on the right. I drove by yesterday and they have tons of them.
