This info is from an email from the City of Joy director, Anita Gallagher to the International Women's Club of Cancun members:
    --------------------
It is nearly time for the Mayakoba Golf Classic, the only PGA event in Mexico. It runs from Thursday 18th – Sunday 21st February.
As you know, the tournament has a strong commitment to supporting local charities. This year, as well as their usual volunteer and donation programme, they are promoting a new initiative.
    Because:
    · The charities need to raise funds
    · The tournament wishes that more people would come to see professional golf at its highest level in the stunning Mayakoba course
    · The general public wishes that it was cheaper and easier to watch the golf
..... the tournament is giving the charities tickets (ground passes) to sell at the great price of $100 MXP per day and ALL proceeds go directly to the charity. It really is a win-win scenario.

The City of Joy Foundation is glad to be part of this initiative.

As you know, the City of Joy is growing every day and so does our commitment to supporting the nine organizations that run the different Homes and Centers in it. We help every single organization in the City of Joy with a direct subsidy in their operating and maintenance costs EVERY month.

By buying Mayakoba tickets you not only get a fantastic day out at a wonderful price, but the satisfaction of knowing that it is not Mayakoba or the PGA who are making money, but that the Foundation will use the funds to support the work of nine organizations who help over 20,000 needy people a year. You can also ask for your tax deductible receipt.

I will be selling tickets throughout February so if you’re interested, please contact me directly: anitagallagher [at] gmail [dot] com. More information is available at www.mayakobagolfclassic.com

    Thank you !!
    Anita

This is actually something that I'm interested in going to, but, I can't find any information on the site on whether or not you must buy a Mayakoba day pass as well as the event ticket...

I was looking at going to an NCAA event in Cancun a few months ago, only to find out that on top of the expensive tickets, you needed a $75 day pass for the hotel just to get on the grounds. Is this the same?

Coby - As I understand it NO. You can buy this Grounds Pass and you are on the grounds and can watch the golfers at each hole. The Mayakoba Golf Course is surrounded by hotels but it's independent of them too. So you can access the tournament without dealing with a hotel at all.

Last year I toyed with volunteering to work one of the holes. You get in for free if you do that (and last year it the grounds pass was pretty expensive). I think they work it so that each hole is manned by a team of folks who know each other. The Women's Club sent a hole team last year but I ended up too busy to do it.

I know that PGA tournaments are super picky about not letting you in with a cell phone. They want NO NOISE when the players are on the course. So they take your cell phone away when you enter and give it back when you leave. It's much less hassle if you just leave your phone at home or in the car.

The PGA gives away a LOT of money to charity. From what I remember the Mayakoba director telling me they give away more to charity than any of the other US-based major sports associations (including MLB, NFL, NHL, etc.). So this grounds-passes-sold-by-charities idea fits with how they like to work.

And I think that in the past tournaments they haven't had the crowds they'd hoped for. And that was because the passes were expensive and also because there isn't much golf culture here, yet. So these cheap grounds passes will help get the people to go see golf, that's the point.

Unfortunately it looks like my Februarys are always too busy. I've already got plans this year that will prevent me from going. Boo.
