Coming up, in Cancun, will be a professional cycling event, the Gran Premio Internacional de Cancún said to be starting October 14 and running for perhaps a total of six days. Rumored to be planning to compete in this event are the Schleck brothers, the Russian Denis Menchov, Fabian Cancellara and Mark Cavendish, riders who figured prominently in this year's very exciting Tour de France. (Which, by the way, was televised live, here, and provided hours of excitement for those who may have had their mornings free.) _________________ Did anyone see the Ironman competition that was held over the weekend, here, in Cancun? These events, which take place all over the world, allow people to compete by sex and age categories, among other things, providing for lots of "winners". The full Ironman event, which occurs over a single day, with no breaks between events, consists of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run. (I know, sounds crazy, but people actually do this! How, I can't imagine.) Hundreds competed in this year's Cancun Ironman. http://ironman.com/events/ironman70.3/cancun70.3/ironman-70.3-veterans-take-title-in-mexico A short video from last year's event will give those who are not familiar with the event a chance to see what it looks like, when run in Cancun! http://video.google.com/videosearch...nman ca#q=ironman cancun&hl=en&emb=0&start=10
V - Thanks for posting about the bike race. Looks like it will be a criterium, which will be fun to watch, so that's good. Some cycling races are better to watch on TV, but a crit gives the crowd a chance to see the riders many times. I wonder where the course is? Any idea? One article I read said that Alberto Contador has been invited (he won this year's TdF for anyone who lives under a rock). I would love to see him ride in person, although I'd really like to see him climb, he's just an unbelievably explosive climber.
It looks like Cantador is planning to ride this event. In an interview, published Sept 2, he mentioned it as one of the criterium he was still planning to ride this year. I read the same thing in another site, so perhaps it's so.... I was a little annoyed with him, owing to his making a public display, to some degree, of his conflict with Lance Armstrong, but he did ride amazingly well in winning the Tour.
I agree, Contador is a bit of an prima donna, but when I saw the way he could sprint so beautifully at the end of a long mountain stage in the TdF I became a fan despite myself. He's a truly gifted cyclist, and he's young, so he may yet get over himself.
Gran Premio Cancun The Gran Premio Internacional of Cancun is being called, locally, the Gran Premio Vive Mexico Cancun 2009. It is now set for Saturday, Oct 17 (rather than the 14th). I'm told it will be a road circuit starting at the Asta Bandera and running to Playa Tortugas, and back (zona hotelera); and, that more details, such as the time of the running of the events, will be available next week.... (I think I must have been wrong about the event lasting six days, as I suggested, initially. It may just be a one day event.)

If you need to, try yourname AT yourdomain DOT com. People can figure out what your address is, but automated spam harvesters cannot, at least not yet.
